Lathe chuck jaws

Recently acquired a 3 jaw chuck for the Colchester, seller said it only came with a set of soft jaws, not sure if they are but I’ll run a file over them to check.

Can I get replacements anywhere?

TEC will do them, MSC may as well.

They certainly look like soft jaws but he must have been using his pet hamster to shape them

Hard jaws: you may be able to track some down ..if not it's a phone call to birmingham (make sure your seated) Rotagrip ...you then will have to way up the condition of the chuck before splashing the cash.

Soft jaws are a definate (thame work holding 'ELI' jaws) Kennedy and other stock them

cheaper to buy a decent second hand chuck complete

3 jaws are perfect for when you will not be removing the part until complete. Turn it concentric do all operations then remove part.

Im a big user of a 4jaw quick repetitive parts that are smaller than my stock I'll stick on the 3jaw

It is rare I use a 4 jaw, really only when it is an odd shape or if it needs offset.
If I am making a complete part in one hit then hard jaws in the 3 jaw.
If I am needing to grip something perfectly true then it is usually soft jaws in the 3 jaw.

I listened to your advice but I’m now 3 days late on a batch job, can’t hold any hex for the next job and qa has gone up the wall cos I’m no longer using soft jaws

Confidence has nothing to do with it.

It's about ability imo, and I will always maintain that 3 jaw chucks are inferior to 4 jaws for someone who knows what they're doing.
