The reason being is the filler wire is being melted across the arc, it then drops off the rod in a small blob and sits in the corner. Like you say no fusion at all.Is it just me or does it look like there is no real fusion on these joints. Seems the rod is sat more on top rather than dropping in.

It’s a personal preference thing but I never do this on dc. I keep my arc length the same and tight all the time. On AC however I do extend my arc length slightlyAs MattH said above, the single most important thing I learned was to keep a really tight arc and pull back a bit as you poke the filler in so that as the puddle expands you don't dip the tungsten. Once I figured that out my welding improved significantly.
What makes you think the penetration is better? Ignore penetration because neither you or I can see it.cosmetic ugliness of the weld the penetration is getting better.
