Laser level set - recommendations

Hi all,

Can anyone please recommend a laser level / setting out set thats not overwhelmingly complicated to set up?

I’ve had a Bosch 6 way with ranage extender, for 4yrs gets used a lot. Not cheap but very good.

GLL 380...

Borrowed a Bosch one a few times, rotary level, , but no 90degree. Receiver on a staff, led screen tells you which way you are. Piece of cake to use.

Used a few types. One of those instances where it really does pay to buy the beat you can afford.

I’ve used cheap dewalts, medium range Bosch, and Hilti and Topcon.

For a cross line or straight line I would get a Bosch.

For a rotary, The topcon for me is an awesome tool for a reasonable amount of money. Luckily I can borrow one at a days notice so have never had to buy.

Leica is in a different league but so is the price.

I ended up with a PLS
Been faultless, used with a detector makes it really useful outside.

I just use a plasterboard prop and handlebar camera mount giving me floor to ceiling height adjustment, camera tripod when outside.

I bought one the other week .It went back same day! It wasn't any use outside with the sun shining onto the area.
Will have to just carry on with string line and bubble etc.

Buy one with a detector mate. Same thing you use with a 360. Doesnt matter if the lines not visible. Still picks it up.

The bosch I have, has a range extender that is also used in strong light

Yup. My pls is spot on. not great in daylight but the detector makes it viable.
For kitchen fitting internal stud works, tiling etc its invaluable.

Was tempted at a DeWalt 3x360° green last week.
100£ unused, in a box with detector and mounting. Didn't ask but for that silly money it's either clone, scam of stolen.

Have a Bosch GLL 3-80 on its way now

But I bought a cheap Lidl one recently. I had no immediate use for it but used it for some minor setting out in the garage. Never expected to use it for anything more challenging than small scale tiling or shelving etc.

For giggles I tried to use it in my son's garden to throw a level from house to garage - about 20 metres. Waited until dusk, ran around with a sheet of paper and found I could pick up the level at that range.

I was stunned.

Much easier than an Egyptian Laser - string and water level.

I have a set of water levels as well paid 4 quid for them from bootsale . guy didn't know what they were there quality ones with brass fittings on them it don't get any more accurate than that over a long distance outside

I bought one from Great Mills, remember them, probably 15 years ago a level with a laser in the end & a cheap & nasty swivel affair. After dark I shone it to a house a couple of hundred yards away & you could see it plainly

Seeing we are talking about levels, when they build these infinity pools how do the get it quite that accurate. It must be spot on to allow the water to trickle over over the whole length?

Surface tension probably helps pull the water over the high spots as does a high pump rate.

You’ll not regret it.


That is if you dont leave the slave unit on top of the cherrypicker wheel and then drive over it

I use the Topcon Laser RL-H4c, but I upgraded the detector unit to a spectra HL700 . This catcher has a much bigger window (127mm) and as long as your laser is in that window , it will also tell you how far up or down from the line you are. ( with most detectors you need to lift the staff up to get the line etc)
This doesnt sound much, but when you are checking base levels, it is easy to work out how much packing you need on each base to get them all level. In the past ive had to measure down, or get someone to measure the gap when i lift the staff to catch the laser)
