Some old clients of mine had that directive passed down on them - basically for matters pertaining to national security all equipment should be sourced at home. My client went up to his boss - who's boss was, let's just say the top of the pile. The reply was along the lines of yeah, great we can do that, if you're willing to jump back 10-15 years in technology because that's how far ahead of the game this little company in the UK is. It was a proud moment for us

We had a local machine tool manuf that specialized in large lathes...sometimes holding the world record.
Seems they got in a bit of hot water making a lathe for barrel turning for a middle east country.

What was the really famous one, where the government scapegoated a company making barrels for saddam hussein I think, and it turned out that the government had Always known about it and they'd been upfront about their dealings. It was a long time ago now. I think they eventually cleared their name but went through all kinds of grief first.

I ordered the tiniest bits of plastic to repair some Siemens lever actuators from Radwell. Cheap as chips but I had to jump through hoops. Seem to recall having to fill in a form as to what industry, final user etc and mention of Homeland Security!

My lad printed them in the end in about 2 minutes each and when the Radwell ones were eventually delivered we kept them as spares.

Some of that stuff is so idiotic it defies logic. I regularly use some smc valves that I can buy off the shelf in the USA. They are all made in Japan... our supplier orders them directly for us as they are non ce units. Our American subsidiary can't export them to us.

The valves from the us are less thsn half the price after shipping and duty
