laptop wont detect SD Cards?

anyone have any idea how i can remedy this issue?

i have 3 SD micro SD card/USB Adapters and around 30 micro SD cards. none of the cards are detected using any of the readers. i get no notification sound that the USB has been plugged in, no file location for the Card, nothing shows in device manager under disk drives, there is no response from my laptop at all...

i have 2 500GB external SSD's that work perfectly, are recognised instantly and have 0 issues.

my laptop is up to date (updated this morning to try and fix this issue) and the cards were all working fine last time they were used about 3 weeks ago when they arrived and i ran them through a recovery scan then formatted them.

the cards also work in other devices such as my action camera and dash cam but even connecting these devices to the laptop, the card in the cards arent detected at all

laptop is a sub 1 year old MSI Cyborg, intel i5-12450 processor, win 11 and everything is up to date

Thinking aloud, is it possible that all of the USB ports are USB3 and the adapters are not and so will not communicate? That doesn't seem likely though because USB 3 should be backwards compatible. Shows how little I know, but no doubt someone who does will be along presently!

adapters are all compatible, i have used them countless times since owning the laptop, and all cards were second hand, however have been accessed, opened, run through a recovery scan, cleaned and since used, all on this laptop.

all my other USB devices work including stuff thta is a lot older than this laptop. i can access my phone via USB and it reads the storage fine, just not SD cards

i have just uninstalled the recent updates back to a date i know the cards were accessible, no change though

been through those, none of it works, i have no memory technology devices showing in Disk manager to allow me to follow that step and the other steps rely on you being able to select the drive from file manager, which i cant

I have binned about 6 usb sd/micro sd or multi readers that have each suddenly failed to read cards or read with lots of errors and its hardware issues in the reader itself or the card, seems the readers are really electrically unreliable and really built down to a minimum price point and just fail one day.
I run linux mostly and can see the bus negotiation failing in a log in realtime. I just buy a new adapter and it starts working fine. They're what, a fiver for a cheap one or 10 quid for something better.
It seems weird they all went bad together but could be worth a try for the cost of them?

statistically it is impossible that a combination of 3 readers and 30 cards have all failed at exactly the same time.

i have now also lost connectivity with my phone via USB which means whatever the problem is, its computer based. the cards have all been proven to work as i have put a random assortment of them in my action camera, taken a short video and played back fine. however if i plug the camera into the computer it simply charges from the USB, i cant access any files or see any indication of the SD card that is mounted in the camera which again tells me that it is the computer not recognising the cards as a strorage device.

the USB ports are fine as they read my SSD's perfectly.

i actually hadnt thought of using linux to try and diagnose it...i run a vrtual machine that could be helpful

so, running kali and there is no indication there either that a USB device has been plugged in, i get no notification sound, no device listed, but again, only for any device using an SD card for storage

Im not suggesting all 30 cards are bad, but if the 3 readers are, you wouldnt know...

If there's nothing in the dmesg log of kali when you push it in and lsusb doesnt list the device in its output that would suggest to me that it or the usb ports controller is electrically dead.

However, if your running under a virtual machine its still potentially going to have the issues from the host unless you booted it from a usb key with kali on or something similar.

i still cant see 3 readers failing at eactly the same time, plus the fact my action camera suffers the same issue and ive lost the ability to read my phones storage...

First thing I'd do is try a new reader and new card combo.

You might have a rogue device which is ruining everything it gets plugged into....

You haven’t had a bios update that’s reconfigured the port have you? For it to not work in those different OSes it must be common to the hardware / port / controlling software.

ive used different readers/devices...ive treid 3 card readers, an action camera and a phone with an SD slot none of them are recognised at all, the computer doesnt even acknowledge they are plugged in.

windows update this morning, but that was after i found the problem had started and i have since uninstalled that update, as well as the previous one so no it is effectively back to exactly how it was when i last used these cards/readers

will look into it and see what i can find. i have just ordered a new reader, but its not going to be here by the time i go away monday and i refuse to set foot into a physical shop on a weekend unless its to quench my thirst or buy ingredients, but as you say, for it to fail to recognise the amount of devices it has, i dont think its the readers

It’s possible that’s it’s all of them but it would be extremely unlikely. Well, unless the port is frying them but that’s not gonna be it - it really smells like a bad config or driver. Did you check if there is a BIOS update available?

If I remember correctly usb 2 and usb 3 controllers are different devices on the same physical port, might be that your usb2 controller has gone faulty. They should show up in device manager and possibly be switched off in BIOS, perhaps you can get a USB3 SD card reader.

This is what i have in bios for USB configuration...the 1 drive it shows is a 500gb SSD that was plugged in and recognised before I restarted to enter bios, the card reader is also plugged in with a 256gb card inserted however still no recognition
