laptop wont detect SD Cards?

Have you tried the readers and usb cards in another laptop, smart tv etc to check they are working? It points to a failure of “something” within the laptop, but rule the things that are easy to check out first.

if other devices work via the same usb ports then the usb ports are fine

then its down to the card readers if they are faulty to the sd card

as just been said even using a plugin camera the same as a phone should show up the card via there internal card readers unless micro crap has made an error and stuff is no longer showing via that way

but that way is an easy check plug in the phone and check the card within the phone

Gaz, yes I understand that the usb ports on the laptop are “working” if other devices are ok, that’s why I suggested at least trying the sd card and readers in something else. Rule out stuff that’s easy to do first, or you can end up going round in circles.

It sounds to me like a failure of software or something inside the laptop rather than the physical port. But it makes sense to prove what you can before moving on to difficult stuff.

I cannot read or recognise any micro SD card regardless of how it is currently plugged in, it also can't access the Internal storage of my galaxy s22

It definitely sounds like a driver issue.
I'd go into Device Manager and uninstal the USB devices. Then scan for changes and see it picks up some better drivers. Otherwise you'll have to have a look for an older driver and instal that.

Done the uninstall through device manager, uninstall everything under the USB tab and then reinstalled and updated...no change.

Also tried installing previous intel drivers and again they all say up to day and working properly but no change

In Device Manager, have you tried changing the View to Devices by Connection?
(tip, if you select a device on the initial Devices by Type view, it'll still be selected when you swap to the Devices by Connection view, which saves you hunting the tree for the device!)

If you can find the USB hub/port, it'll show everything connected to it.
And then if you tick the Show hidden devices option in the View menu, it'll show various devices that have been connected to that port.

Check to see if the adapter shows up, or is in the hidden items, as that will at least tell you if the adapter is being recognised.
You might want to try a known working device in the USB port first, just so you can make sure you have the correct USB hub in the list.

Reader works fine on my father's laptop...I now have a usb C (3.1) hub with a micro sd reader and it picks the card up straight away

id agree thats windows drivers ( software issue ) itself then and thats where you cant do a thing with as windows wants its own drivers to run its gear

unless windows upgrades the issue or you flag it you probably wont get anywhere

I once had a similar problem after updating to win 10 in that the built in sd reader would no longer write to cards, tried all sorts at the time

Welcome back.

I'm not entirely sure whether I 'need' to resolve this issue now as I have this usb c adapter that everything seems to run fine through, and it has micro sd, full size SD and a usb slot on and my other devices all work fine in the original ports.

Will keep looking into it as and when I remember, got other things need looking into at the moment though, the key to which is on one of the cards so just glad I can access them on this laptop again

once ive got the issue out of the way that i was starting to resolve when i realised the USB reader wasnt reading i may shift everything onto an SSD and factory reset. had to do that shortly after buying it but cant remember why but it fixed whatever issue i was having then

The USB dongle thing will have its own built in USB2 bridge which is why it works, my guess is you have a faulty one in your laptop. If it is less than 1 year old you could get it replaced under warranty but no doubt they would just replace and you’ll have the hassle of transferring. If it was me I’d live with the dongle.
