Mine does 35plus mpg with a diesel and has done for may years. No idea how much it's saved but it is probably quite a few pennies.

I don't think 30 is difficult for the 2.25 if it isn't being worked hard. I think I was usually getting 20 ish but that was on short journeys consisting of hills and more hills or stop start town driving. I'd certainly expect 30 in better driving conditions.

The Saudis are out to kill fracking and they've loaded for bear; this will run as long as they have an overdraft, and even after that there's the prospect of Iran being freed from sanctions a lowering it further plus no sign of an economic recovery in China. Get used to £1 a litre. In any case I said if you do not do many miles it didn't make sense; the effort of an engine swap is not insignificant, or the cost of paying someone to do it for you and would take many years to pay you back if it's a weekend toy.It saved me saying it anywayAs for the petrol idea, if you want to pay 50p a mile then do it. It's under £1 a litre while the supermarkets are having a price war but it will not stay low forever.
There's also the more esoteric argument of originality; series landrover values are on the rise and fewer and fewer are still in the form they left Solihull.

Too much messing around swapping engines when you could be enjoying using it, mpg is not a concern for me, I'm genuinely happy to get 25mpg from the freelander

I have plans for building them someplace ( I used to work for a fabricator who made landrover parts as a sideline when quiet) I think it a 2 isn't it not a 2a ? the petrol will go plenty deep enough the old diesel was slower than a stunned slug (which might be better than putting silly vast v8 s in the like I did in my youth those breaks, steering and suspension just aint up to it LOL) buying new bits and major re-builds you might as well go get a 5k Toyota pick up for wading

Hi, I would say that is a 2A. It has a 'D' suffix (1966) on the reg plate, not conclusive because it could be a late registration. There are a couple of other things, the doors are 2 piece and the front apron is curved, there are other tell tales but they're not visible in the picture.

It's very difficult to tell a S2 from an early 2a the major difference was the 2286cc diesel engine replacing the 1997cc unit fitted to the S2 and later S1's. From memory other thing were details like a different steering wheel and opening vent knobs getting smaller, there were also changes to the cooling system as well IIRC. You simply can't tell from looking at the thing, the only way to be sure is the chassis number, if it starts with a 1 it's a S2 if it starts with a 2 it's a S2a.

I used to drive petrol Land Rovers when I worked for the council and never got more than 15mpg and if towing a gang mower or trailer full of marking equipment it went down to single figures and I'm sure they don't get better with age. Kid yourself all you want but you will never convince me a petrol Land Rover is a good idea even for weekend only use.

1997cc was a petrol, the early diesel was 2052cc then both went to 2286cc

My ex-MoD 109 2.25 petrol was my daily driver for 5 years or so. It was LPG converted, had a Stage 1 head and electronic ignition and overdrive. It ran like a sewing machine and reached the dizzy heights of 21mpg on a good long run. Ordinarily it would be high teens on normal day to day stuff. It knocked spots of my V8 110 that would do about 10mpg on a good day.

Shallow type sills didn't come in until late 1968, December IIRC. S2a started September 1961.
That is certainly a 2A. It has the correct 2A front panel, apron, lights and vent flaps. Virtually identical to my 1965 2A.

Stretching the old grey cells a bit here but IIRC the S2 had the 228cc6 petrol and 1997cc diesel (might have got the capacity wrong 2052cc?c not going to argue over a few cc's) then when the S2a came out the diesel went to 2286cc as well.
