Front panel, apron, lights and vent flaps? don't recall the 2 - 2a being any different? please educate us ( not taking the mick, I would like to know what the changes were)

Front panel changed the light mounting. you will see that S2's have large chrome mounting rings, S2a's have the lights mounted behind the grille. This actually didn't change until early 2a production, but this is the later type. The aprons went from being squared to curved, Most S2a's used the all plastic sidelights and indicators like you see on a modern defender. The S2's used various different ones, normally glass lenses with chrome retaining rings. Vent flaps went from having the hinges bolted on, to having them spot welded on.

Series 2 doors were one piece with built in drains for the window channel, 2A were two piece. Vent openers had a bakelite knob you turned to open the flaps, 2A had vertical sliders. There was a slide away panel on the transmission to fill the main box, 2A didn't. passenger seatbox locker was made of Ali and had a hinged lid, 2A had a steel floor to it and the lid was loose and hooked in at the rear. Transfer box intermediate gear shaft was smaller diameter on the Series 2. Series 2 rear lights were wired to a plug that went into a socket on the rear crossmember, which could be unplugged to plug in another for the trailer. Some differences were blurred around change over from 2 to 2A, but pretty much all would have been in place by 1966.

another option the 2 1/4 petrol can be tuned very effectivly. basic manifold inprovements and basic headwork and a decent programabl ignition system will do wonders.
the old diesels are as bad as everyone says, fittest one ever played with was a 2.5 TD 90 (reasonably fresh engine) that managed to wind itself up to 80 ish then it nipped up. there was a reason so meany 2.8 isuzu lumps went in 90's and rangerovers before the tdi became redily avalible.
