I have an aftermarket bumper on my rangie, allthough i didnt make it myself. But if you want some ideas to usefull stuff to have on it, mines got highlift jack points about 18" either side of centre and also substantial mountings with shackles on for recovery just below. Its also made out of 6mil tubing. One thing i did wish it had on it was a off centre towball to make it easier moving trailers about. As for the steering guard what ever you do dont make a 1 piece one-i wish i hadnt as once its bent and you take it off to staighten it its a real pain in the **** to get the holes to line up again. Heres a pic of what i've got when it was fitted to my 300tdi disco.

I paid £120 for it 2nd hand, but i couldnt weld at the time. It would prob cost next to nothing to make though. It is bloody heavy and i'm sure if you made one out of 3/4mil tubing it would still be plenty strong enough as i've cought trees with mine and it hasnt budged an inch!!

Don't go too big and heavy ,whatever you do. All this talk of six millimetre tube 
Just remember the chassis it attaches to is only about 2mm if your lucky and it's not thinned with corrosion. Easier to straighten a bumper than a chassis rail.
I seem to remember the 300 series Disco's used sacrificial crush cans between the bumper and chassis rail. May be worth incorporating something similar.

Here are a couple of pics for you Mr Flatmajor,The ackro's I used have a 3mm wall section, not 6mm as mentioned before, the bumper is bolted to the chassis using the original bolts and the original holes, I made the plates to bolt it on with out of 3mm chequer plate ( because I had it)
I cut blanks for the ends with a holesaw filled the hole in the center with weld as I welded them on'
The recovery points are bolted on and welded.
