My local independent LR chap fitted a solid (admittedly Britpart) flywheel to my TD5 Disco when doing my clutch,

There are horror stories about britpart clutches falling apart etc thats why I fit luk or valeo . They are OEM

i have a moto/saying that i live by for britpart aka sh!tp4rt for my landies....if it moves or is important do not use britpart, go OEM or something else..

A DMF that is worn can be more out of balance than a solid SMF, the wear is not only as shown in the video but radially and it should 'self centre' if it doesnt there is wear in the radial springs etc
I have fitted quite a few solid conversions and never had a problem I am doing one now at the mo (it is on the lift) on a td4 dearlander ---(they should have been called that from the start not--- freelander)
A lot of talk about broken cranks is scaremongery IMO, if you are keeping it I would convert, as long as it is a reputable manufacturer ie luk or valeo etc it will be ballanced correctly for the job, there is some truth in the fact they reduce the impact on the gearbox but that type box has been used with the 200/ 300 with no DMF for years, it is only the modern car and van gearboxes that are built too small anyway, that suffer.
Ps with your rear calipers have you tried the pads in them because with the ridicules curved shape of the pad the caliper body wears and allows the pads to move and drop into the caliper and rubs on the disc effectively sawing the disc flange off.
On mine I have drilled the 'ear' on the pad and put a long split pin right through the two pads this stops the pad dropping through.

Also with the tranfer box the open bit of the casing that fits onto the gear box shaft has a taper bearing in there you can just see it from the outside, it is worth replacing that coz if it has run even slightly low on oil that bearing gets hot and wears quickly, also the ratios are / can be different and the ratio is on a sticker on the box you can end up with the car under or overreving .

Thanks for the advice but I'd rather keep it standard, if in another 80k I need to do it again or 100k I will but just like to know it's not a whole lot different from standard other than areas that can really be improved I.e chassis.
I'll check but never saw an issue with the disks.
I'll give my gearbox guy a message about the bearing, thanks for the heads up. best done now if I need to I guess.

It's allot worse on a defender facebook page. Maybe because they can see your pictures easier. Who knows.

Dont worry folks I did inquire at the time to make sure that the welder was OK .

Not sure if I am correct, but I think Kim is only 23, which to me is the really impressive fact. I wouldn't have had the confidence to start such a big project from scratch at that age. I am feeling out I'd depth with my car project and that had an mot before I started prodding it with a screwdriver.

for instance as a comparison
MY LAD who is 26 filled full, his girlfriends car engine with water I said why?, AH I see ------you could'nt find any 710, was that coz the yellow filler cap was on upside down ?? (look at 710 upside down)
one step son 24 could'nt change his underpants without putting them on backwards let alone change a spark plug.
