Don't let it get you down, you've broken the back of stripping it. Just think forward to how you will feel screwing all those nice painted bits onto a nice new chassis with new bolts. One thing I always do & I'm sure you also think the same, is grease the bolts before fitting. It might be me that has to take it back apart later, can save hours of work.

I'll be glad to get axles done and ready for painting then it'll hopefully start going a bit better. Off to strip them now so photos later

Hi, you've made good progress and broken the back of it, don't despair. A good thing to learn is when to step away, go have a cuppa, have a bacon sandwich, sit on the washing machine. Have a day off and go and do something else, treat yourself and come back refreshed. It's surprising but a renewed start can mean it all goes well again. Good luck.

Lol thanks, hopefully both axles will be stripped by this evening. Just got to take brakes off rear now and wheels. Then can go get the front

When you come to remove the rear brake drums, I don't know if you are aware, there is a threaded hole in the drum that you can screw a bolt into that bears against the hub & 'jacks' the drum away. The drum locates really tight on the centre & it makes it easier to get off.

You say you are the clumsiest girl ever, but I don't know of another girl that's rebuilding a Landy, working on vehicles, bleeding knuckles are normal, we've all been there. Keep up the good work, your doing great

Absolutely right, "chassis rash" is a badge of office, wear it with pride.

I've got disks all round. Luckily have a brand new set of disk and pads.

Hi, "chassis rash" is what you have got, skinned knuckles, digs, scrapes, bruises and other marks from close encounters with various mechanical parts of a vehicle that don't give much. It's not directly related to levels of skill or clumsiness.

Damn, I thought I qualified for a level of clumsiness. I thought to myself after my last post that I was doing good and haven't really had any mishaps today :O straight after i had a mishap which I'll show later lol. Not sure how I'm going to explain it. Couldn't make it up though, not sure what's wrong with me.

Nothing wrong Kim. .. just doing something where knocks & bruises are par for the course, as are attacking yourself with spanners grinders and hammers, setting fire to things and falling over crap you know you should have tidied up before you started.. doing a job most blokes can't handle these days and doing it well

So today I stripped the axles as much as I could starting with the rear axle. I've had to order a 52mm socket so when that comes I can finish the job but at least I can get the brakes and all the little parts shot blasted
Anyway here goes
Started by draining the oil

Then removed the dampers, and the spring mounts.

I knew this was going to be tough so got the impact driver to initially Jult the bolt undone then used my impact gun to finish it off I was so nervous because I thought it was going to be impossinle to do but it was fine

All done don't think it's ever been removed.

I then wondered if how the mud was chopping off if it was taking a layer of metal with it ?

Then took the wheel off and started stripping the brake off. Every single bolt my spanner got stuck and spent 10mins on each trying to remove it! Wasn't amusing

Callipers off and done because I need a 52mm socket to remove the disk

Then started on the front axle

Removed the dampers, spring mounts, the big bars things behind and the rod that connects the wheels together.

Removed the wheels, took one calliper off which wasn't hard just a pain because I had to smash an impact socket on to them, I don't have any of the multi point sockets .

As you can imagine, smashing a socket on the calliper bolts meant I had to get it off , so was putting them on a vice and wiggling them off with a hammer. Ended up one flew off and smashed the window in my dads garage literally can't make this stuff up! I'm so stupid sometimes.

Decided to strip the callipers as I want them shot blasted. I'll drop them off in the morning, this is the brake pads though, still got 1000 miles in them

Tidied up and got a photo of the rear axle, just need the socket as I said. I'm dreading rebuilding them. So many bits everywhere, making me a bit nervous, need to order all the bolts and stuff too.

Tomorrow I'll order all the bolts, bushes etc that I need to just do it in one go. Can't wait till they are done!

Will you have any help when putting it back together as its sometimes hard to lift/position things and put bolts in by yourself ?

Thanks. Nice to be appreciated somewhere. I'll do everything I can on my own and use my engine crane to lift anything I need to. If I do need help I'll ask but I've done it all on my own so far just came up with ways to do things when they are heavy.

Nice to see your handiwork , I spent the afternoon in my workshop with my 4 year old daughter stripping down a generator, I'm hoping she will grow up with an interest in engineering.

Bad luck about the window but I'm sure that your father must be proud of you doing this and will be tolerant. D/G units aren't too expensive. From the well eqipped garage I suspect your old man is or was into vehicles?

I may not tell him as he moved out. But he's never been massively into mechanical side of cars. The garage was made for a wood shop but before he left he sold all the big tools he had.
