Hello
I bought a 15hp chipper second hand cheap, which has served me well for around a year. Its striped out the keyway on the shaft, (which must be a cheese grade drive shaft as it's too soft), my first thought was to buy a new shaft, but there not available and I think the chipper and hammer cage are welded to the shaft, getting into a big job at that point.
I dont want to spend hundreds on the new part, which is the whole chipper and hammer unit, as the machine was bought for less than half that.
My thought was initially to weld up the keyway using a brass block to get the keyway correct. But it has made a real mess of the shaft, putting almost a chewed up flat on it. So I was also thinking of welding the pulley onto the shaft, to be ground off for bearing changes and alike.
So my questions are, can I weld the cast pulley with out cracking it etc
and
would it be practical to weld up a keyway using a brass block, then file back to 24mm spinning the shaft like a lathe, balancing is not a problem as hanging off the shaft are swinging hammers and a chipper blade.
Thanks for any advice
Jon
