I’m not really up on snap on but as far as I know they are generally rebranded “other” makes. I can’t see them putting their name to any rubbish so I think you would be pretty safe.

I reckon you could probably have got a similar spec welder for cheaper without the snap on badge but the upside is you will probably be able to sell it on (if you wanted to) at a later date with the added “snap on tax” so you shouldn’t be out of pocket. £400 doesn’t sound horrifically expensive for a branded mig welder (160 amp is a kit low but I guess being SO is aimed at car bodywork stuff to be honest, anything cheaper would be pretty bargain basement, so I’d just crack on and use it!

Will it weld aluminium?
Without knowing the specifications of the machine it’s a bit difficult.
What thickness of aluminium are you thinking about?
Myself I won’t mig below about 4mm with 1.2mm wire on a 300amp capable welder that can be used with a spool gun and spray transfer. Anything thinner then I’d use tig.
You then also need pure argon for welding aluminium

The only difference between this machine and all the other imported 150 - 200A inverter welders ( Rohr, Uptime, BlackLine, StaticArc, etc. ) which you can find discussed and tested in this Forum is the badge, and the price. If your purchase price included the gas regulator and if there is a long warranty and it is transferable to you, then it might have been worth the x2 markup.

That wasn't being hostile that was being truthful, you'd already spent you beer tokens ("I just bought this ProMig 160E"). If you'd bought a piece of crap you would have been told so by someone here.
The original purchaser just paid well over the odds, probably doubled for the "Name" on the case.

Hi, Will. The guys on here can be a bit abrasive sometimes and they perhaps forget that we were all newbies in here at one time. Stick around and you will find out that the guys yanking your chain today will be an absolute fount of knowledge and support once you get going.

If you google it, you can get a pdf of the manual to download which should give you the specs of your welder.

On the plus side, it's a good brand, parts should be available, it will have a decent resale market, and it looks in good nick.

You've bought it now so no use worrying about the price. If you are doing a big project like a car you will save the purchase price by doing your own welding. And you'll still have a decent branded machine to sell on afterwards to get some of the cash back.
