I was thinking something along the same lines - I do always wonder about vice "restorations" as its just a tool . . . but then I remember I rebuilt my Lancia (which went all the way to the MOT station and back this year . . ) and to some, a car is just a tool, so . . .

Not many Lancias left now. Which one do you have? I had a Beta that failed miserably on rust after 3 years and a HPE which caught fire and burned out. Both new. Actually I had three but the first HPE got resprayed by the importer without removing the protective delivery coating, so the paint literally fell off!. They said they would respray it again but I'd had enough by then and demanded a new car.

The humble sewing machine's importance in industrial and social history very often overlooked.
Apparently the first machine to enter the home, freeing women who otherwise would spend days making clothing, to seek employment, revolutionising the clothing industry, creating more work, a need for more cotton, steel ect.


There are people out there who collect sewing machines, with the same enthusiasm some folk collect old vices/vises, and woe betide anyone who picks up a machine by putting a hand under its neck. Touching the gilding with bare hands, or turning the hand wheel backwards, can cause instant loud tutting, and possibly a serious look of disgruntlement.

That's what we do with the treadle machines. I fitted my wife's Newhome machine into an old Singer treadle base as it makes a good sewing table. She wouldn't let me use her machine for the stuff I wanted to do so I bought myself a Toyota machine. We have an old Singer, a Jones and a Bradbury machine. The Singer has all it's attachments and the books for hire purchase that it came with, 1s 11d a week for life
