Job offer in India ???

Well this boat lark is getting me some offerings over the last few years and this is another. Just dont know where to go with it.

Another odd one here that has come my way in the boating world. After the offering of work in Italy for 6 months to making a TV programme. I hope you dont mind me asking you and asking for advice on this, with me not being a man of the world you see.


A chap called Prem has been trying to get in touch with me from India, he is not Indian though but from South Africa and now living over there. He says he found me through this forum. He called me and we chatted for a while and he sounds legit but i am cautious as always as all he wants is my knowledge and willing to work with him and his team of three other chaps.


He has offered to fly me over there a few times a year for 2-3 weeks at a time and pay me with nothing from me, but as said my knowledge. I dont think he understands this is a hobby i enjoy and not a marine engineer or qualified boat builder.


Well what he is wanting to do is build boats over there in India and ship them over here to sell. These being the narrow beam boat type as the one i am doing in my new project, so a 40 plus footer. He was going to buy the Norman 32 that was on Ebay, but he said he missed out on it and asked if i would be interested on taking my over. To do the extension and build it with modifications and rename them as then it wont be a Norman for copyrights but a new boat.


Thats about it really, i am just to cautious maybe?


If this was offered to yourself, what would you think ?

Being Indian, having been there a few times, having done consultancy there a few times and knowing a few things my advice to you is a simple flat out no !!

Indians are not known for their love of boats, tools will be non existent, working conditions will be Dickensian and it will be generally crap

He never signed up as a member, how did he get your personal details? I couldn't phone you up out of the blue without getting them from yourself.

Up to you obviously, but I wouldn't be going anywhere, nor sharing my knowledge - sounds to suspicious old me and that he's making it too attractive for you to turn down....

Ask for a nice big sum up front to cover ALL your expenses up front and see what happens....I suspect this is maybe one of those self funding deals where your expenses and wages are covered out of "future profits"...but the timing difference between incurring the expenses and the profits coming in has been ignored so you're basically funding the company startup!

He first contacted me on WhatsApp asking if i was the chap on YBW forum as he would like to talk to me aout the idea, and then he asked to call using WhatsApp. I have no clue apart from that as not up on tech and how folk can find each other. .

I asked him details but first he wants to see where i want to go with it before he sends out emails to me as in his words `takes a long time to write them up a a lot to say`

Its good then i a curious and cautious i guess. India doesnt sound the best place to work in, and come to think now from what i have seen its not exactly ahead in times.

This offer of a fantastic new life is only a couple of clicks away from my Great great uncle is going to send you his inheritance but needs your bank details...keep plugging away with s11te going into your wellies full of holes mate as its more secure

Having worked for an Indian BPO company I tend to agree with the above. Even in the Tech world India isn’t exactly 1st world. Exaggerating is everyday practice and even when the intentions are good the reality is usually a huge disappointment.
Indian people are lovely, the food is excellent and the social side was great when I was there, but be under no illusions, redneck engineering is the norm, Heath and safety doesn’t really exist and broken promises happen all the time.
I would treat it with caution personally. Nothing wrong with cautious investigations and even a trip out there as long as the ticket is 2 ways. But be ready for things to be not quite what you were told.

The other way is.....my day rate is 750 uk pounds per day, 28 days in advance, proof of accomodation, and a return flight, before I leave the house.
