I worked for several years doing datacomms for a mining company where most of the London based staff were South African. I can certainly confirm that there were no shrinking violets to be found amongst these guys when there was a service affecting problem on the global network.

Out of the top ten, I have lived and worked in five of them. Nicaragua and Venezuela are going to be up there and I wouldn't send my worst enemy to those.

I feel for decent people who live in these places and are not well off enough to escape.

When I was in Oz, I had wanted to go on to NZ but had made a backside of my OZ visa and only had a single-entry one [note to self, do your homework better ] which meant I'd not be allowed back in....

I was going to fly to 'Murica to do the 'Drive Away' thing but there were no direct flights to San Fran available for my timescale. Travel agents suggested I could get a flight to Colombia and from there to the USA. No way was I doing that. Imagine a single bloke from the UK arriving at Customs in the States on a flight from Columbia.....I'm didn't fancy the thought of full body [cavity ] searches, I wasn't going down that road...


EDIT: Instead I got a flight to Hawaii and spent a week in a top-floor penthouse apartment with it's own terrace and a view of the beach - and no, I didn't pay anything remotely approaching full rental price since it was sitting empty and I happened to wander in off the street at the right time . I doubt you'd be so lucky these days, that was about c 30 years back.

I agree it happens in the UK too (and here for that matter), but they do appear to take it to another level there. Personally I be more scared of going to the US than South Africa as far as gun crime is concerned.

Imagine a single bloke from the UK arriving at Customs in the States on a flight from Columbia.....I'm didn't fancy the thought of full body [cavity ] searches, I wasn't going down that road...

One of the guys at work flew into the States a few years ago and was pulled out of the queue for a 'random search'. There were two doors marked 'private interview room' or similar. When he went in it turned out to be one large office with a waist-high partition supposedly creating two 'interview rooms', over which he could clearly see another traveller, stripped to his boxers and having a drunken rant at the various officials.

I wish they'd bring back 'Spitting Image' and 'Drop the Dead Donkey', both incredibly clever shows.

I'm sure I read just before last xmas that they ARE bringing back Spitting Image. You can see why they shelved it; the politicians and 'celebs' of the time were neither nowt nor summat. Look at what they've got to work with now, though Boris, Don, another batch of Royals, Kim Pong whatsisname, Breeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeexit (it goes on and on ), the Middle East...

Fixed that for you. It’s quite a novel experience. Not that I would want anybody to go through it. Was interesting to say the least. You body is a very interesting organism in how it deals with that. It must have been a good couple of minutes before I realised that the hot sweaty feeling wasn’t sweat....Didn’t even hear the bangs....

Do tell - you can't leave us in suspense like that!

Basically your body reacts with fight or flight. The unimportant things don’t get preference, only things that will help you survive. You do things without a second thought. The will to live at all costs is very strong. You feel no pain. Strange uncomfortable burning sensations, but not pain. Once you are away from the immediate threat, things change. Mouth tastes like you have been gargling with iron filings, from all the adrenaline you have been running on. You get the shakes worse than a junkie doing the funky chicken or cold turkey thing they go through when trying to break their addiction. Pain comes later to make you fully aware you ain’t dead yet..

Aye, I saw that one but you didn't say that you'd been shot.
