The danger with getting a belt isn't the shock, which isn't pleasant, but is highly unlikely to kill you, it's the involuntary reflex, which could cause you to overbalance and fall on something, or your hand could catch something sharp or contact moving parts.
Yup, the good old reflex action is the worst bit. The shock will usually just make the finger joints, and possibly elbow joint, ache for a short while, but what you hit with your hand or arm is usually the cow. Once gave myself a week of pain and limited grip through smacking the back of my hand on a wooden cabinet due to the reflex action.
