iTunes …. Proved right

Morning all , here some food for thought , I am always a bit of a Luddite when it comes to tech , last to get new tech , in with “da kids” .

I always said I wasn’t keen on iTunes as you don’t “own” the music . But anyway I caved in and over time bought a few albums and songs . Some downloaded on top disc , others not .

Here’s the hard lesson , haven’t used it for a while and last night went to throw on some music and over 50 songs greyed out , some are individual songs from albums , not the complete album .

So after a while managed to speak to someone from apple , yep believe it or not , over the phone . And they said it is down to user agreements with the artists or agents etc .

So my questions was “how does that leave me after having paid for them” . To which I was told if you babe had them longer than 3 months there is no refund as you have had time to “enjoy” them .

And here lies the lesson , go back to CD where possible . As when you click “buy” on iTunes it really means “rent” . I know I could have burnt off more , but you aren’t warned of these issues when purchasing .

basically you never own them and the users cant do as they please if they connect to the net

remove it from the net and its yours

just proves a point

with music and games and dvds it can all be removed from you at some point something ive been saying for years

you also dont have the right to sell them either after buying them

my advice here look elsewhere you will find them

get there names and track number

download them and keep them away from the net

I have never purchased digital media exactly because of this … quite foreseeable really given corporate greed.

Oh no sir. You need to subscribe to our service to access your media now ….

Xyz media have their own media service now and we can no longer stream it because they have withdrawn the rights…

that’s why Star Trek discovery is no longer on prime, and why all Disney content is disappearing on to their own service.

And it’s only going to get worse.., like artists selling their catalogue to a single music company… your entire Beatles collection sir? You have to sign up to xxx music now and pay again …

Or if you use Amazon Music then you get MP3s rather than some locked down format and you can keep it in perpetuity. I use it because I can download them onto SD cards for use in the car etc.

If you buy a CD on Amazon if you sign into Amazon Music you'll usually have the MP3 available as well for free.

you can have digital copys as long as it dosnt touch the net so best having a second pc and all files on that machine

use hard drives as a back up as well

cds do fail over time more so burnt ones

you cant buy cd printers anymore or there hard to find

beaware of windows 10/11 has the same potential of deleting your collection

we no longer sell the cd the problem is getting the cd

I don't mind Netflix, even though they often remove films just as i wanted to watch them.
Spotify has been pretty flawless for me. I pay £10/month and enjoy as much or as little music as I want. I've never seen anything removed from there, not on any of my library playlists anyway.

You can back up iTunes stuff offline on a memory stick or something, I’ve done that before.

I don’t mind that as when i accept Netflix terms and conditions it is blatantly obvious you are “renting” a service , no different than back in the “good old days” when you rented a vhs or dvd , it wasn’t forever

But I ( wrongly) assumed apple being so big what I ( supposedly ) purchased wouldn’t just disappear into the oblivion .


Years ago I signed up to a video streaming service , either rent or purchase , I can’t remember the original name , who then sold out to talk talk , I bought a few films etc but you could download / burn your purchaes . A few years later they sold out Rakuten , Chinese owned and I naively signed the agreement to move as apparently it would stay the same service but low and behold , within 6 months it changed and you can’t download unless they remove the film and have a limited window to do so .

So again , back to buying physical dvds .

I just don’t get it anymore , you own it but you don’t

cd and dvds are being phazed out by the corporates

as its already happened with the games side of it

they also dont want you to have any type of resale on any item you own because its not in there pocket

simple really for the corporates

no drm no anti copy software all sales direct with no resale value

the user becomes the monkey and buys into something they never own

Ah yes that's right You have hard drives full of pirates films and music. :) Yeah I wouldn't want them to find that either. I only own what is a really good film and that i want it in a dvd disc im same with my music and my games i want a disc not a digital copy i cant sell on when im bored...

So everyone who had moved from the stand-alone to the "cloud" can then no longer open their files.

For this reason, more than any other, im way more comfortable with systems that can operate without a network connection.

I always buy a CD then rip it to store on my NAS. Apart from anything else I don't have the bandwidth to stream everything.
I do try and buy physical games, but that is hard to do these days for PC.

I suppose you can take some comfort in the knowledge that if 'they' take away your digital music, you can always 'obtain' a copy from somewhere online without paying for it again .....

I've moved over to Spotify a couple of years ago now. I play it through my phone to the radio in the LR and other cars, or through wifi speakers in the house. It's less faff than CDs that get damaged through poor handling, lost/broken cases etc, never mind storing them somewhere in the car. We have a family account so the kids can use it too.

I often think that £10/month is crazy cheap for the vast, vast library that is Spotify. High quality music that can stream just about anywhere, and a user-friendly app, seamless integration between phone and computer etc.
I've never even considered buying music since I signed up, and my 50gb of mp3s I'd scrounged up as a teenager are completely redundant.

Adobe released a standard for raw photos called DNG (digital negative) completely open standard and published so, in theory, the files will always be readable
