and for the young! All people under the age of 25 in Scotland get free bus travel.

I genuinely have no clue why and, with the best will in the world, it does seem like my 18 year old paying his own bus fare to college means public money could be better spent elsewhere...

True Gaz, the trouble is any planning application to build or extend anything as big as a reservoir will get kicked about the table for donkeys years. Bound to be the subject of legal wrangles, consultation and appeals, rainwater harvesting is a simple and quick partial fix.

It was particularly dry last year and this year is even worse. 4 weeks with no rain in Wales - incredible! The rivers are very low. I doubt there is much hydro power around at the moment.

So we have cheaper water bills and 35% more investment per household than English water authorities. Also cleaner beaches.

Yep, the same people that whinge and whine about the petrol price but think nothing of driving two miles or less to pay the gym to lift up their weights instead of staying home and filling and emptying a watering can 50 times twice a week to keep the garden plants alive whilst getting much need exercise… go figure

No, well over budget at £300 million and years late, though relative to the likes of HS2 at over £50 Billion over budget and over 4 years late perhaps not much of a story.

There are no water bills for domestic properties in NI.

There is change, in the past few years new planning legislation for Sustainable Urban Drainage came into effect. So any new housing or industrial development does have to include for large underground storage tanks for flood mitigation.

Aka a sized restrictor plate means the water is mostly contained on site during a storm event and trickles out slowly for hours after.

It's not rainwater harvesting mind you but that may come too. Trouble is most of this water collected from large car parks etc is polluted too so needs treated.

I don't have a water butt at my house - so shoot me. It's not practical to have one in a town and when there is a hose pipe ban its simples. Garden does without

We should be ok, this was the old bore hole that the house would have used when there was no mains water, the pipe has broken off about 10 foot down and a chamber has been built around it, it runs constantly and when it fills to the level of the hole in the side it runs into the dyke, it only looks scummy as I dipped it with a bucket to remove the iron froth on top, once it settles it clear as a bell

Google Steventon Reservoir if you have time to spare, Thames Water have been trying to build a 7 sq km reservoir for at least 20 years…

I've got the hose and sprinkler / wavy thing on in the garden now. The only time I've used it before was for new grass seed but this is the first time I've felt the need just for the ordinary lawn.

We had 1 hour of rain last Sunday and that's been the only in 4 weeks. And yes, this is in Scotland!

I was heading to Edinburgh from Larbert on Sunday, we got hit by a really heavy shower. First rain I’ve seen in a month, lively smell. More rain forecast for us tomorrow

But watering the garden means you can't dress up like a super hero and watch yourself in a mirror. Although thinking about it I suppose you could dress up and pose ,if nothing else it would give the neighbors a giggle.

i can also say the same with the farmers as well they can collect water from streams as well as draining there own fields for collection but they dont collect water for storage in large silos instead that tap into the normal supply and use that

I'm pretty sure any water running of fields and farmland is pretty well controlled by government bodies.

if you tried to irrigate 500 acres of wheat off a mains tap a loaf of bread would then cost £100

Nope, only on the ones I fitted to the inlet of the treatment works....

Are you sure that that's what it is?

Its not what you think it is! so many of the places around here are still on bore holes/springs the council does a free water testing service so its fine to drink, boiling might be preferable though...

We have two water butts linked together for watering the borders and hanging baskets. Both are empty because rain water has not kept up with usage.

It's not a large garden either, much smaller than average.

if you been on the m62 motorway you will have seen them



in oxford there is more places better suited for a few dams being built instead of a soil filled dam

It’s on a plain, will be visible from Wantage, Didcot, Abingdon… The county council had earmarked the land for housing development but if it goes ahead the reservoir will feed London.
