Trouble is the private firms main interest is dividends for their shareholders.

I don't care as long as i have regular clean water out my taps and my "morning delivery" gets taken away with ease

It;s funny how they build loads of new Houses all across the land but never improve the water supply/removal.

The reservoirs are full in the South East but the water company can't keep up with demand apparently!

Same with hot tubs. In laws have one. It gets emptied and deep cleaned twice a year, rest of the time it’s administered with chemicals pretty much the same as a fish tank.

What is wasteful however is weekly changes. I’ve a pal here who has holiday glamping pods. They’ve a hot tub for the guests.

He was doing as my in laws. His insurers have now insisted on a water change between bookings.

Nobody can work out why. Must be claim driven as these things always are, but even so it seems a bit stupid.

I tend to agree with this BUT can you imagine the state we would be in these days with the current Government looking after our water and sewage management Thank God its in private hands i say.

It would be a complete disaster and the government would say it should be privatised to make it more efficient. Oh wait!

I agree and don’t fancy the ones in hotels and such, but you’d think it would be more like a swimming pool in terms of management or whatever.

Just seems a wasteful way of going about it.

Brutal decisions need to be made if we want to carry on enjoying the luxury of turning on a tap and drawing potable water. Utilities are expected to meet our normally expanding demand levels and that of a very large towns worth of extra people washing up on our shores every year, that's a monumental amount of extra housing and demand. Its not going to happen without fast tracking some serious infrastructure improvements.

i can also say the same with the farmers as well they can collect water from streams as well as draining there own fields for collection but they dont collect water for storage in large silos instead that tap into the normal supply and use that

You can't use road run off most of the time as it is polluted with heavy metals & tyre dust as well as oil etc.

I was a bit shocked when I calculated the annual run off for my new fairly modest shed. 15900 litres! Trouble is it all comes at the wrong time of year and I can only store so much. There's no drains at the bottom of my garden.

I've got diverter to a couple of water butts and I may get more. I discovered the taps on the butts are shaped to fit hozelock fittings so I can send the excess round the garden and even to a drain by the house with a long enough hose.

Things have improved where more modern/upgraded road building has taken place, largely unseen on most motorways and dual carriageways are thousands of attenuation tanks/pits with interceptors for pollution control, final product is fit for discharge into rivers and streams. Still a long way to go if we want to get serious about harvesting runoff on a sizeable scale.

fyi, if you're stacking IBCs up, put a breeze block onto of the lid of the bottom ones... so the ones ontop push down on the lids of the ones below

I used to have 6 stacked 3 high... the water pressure in the bottom and middle ones would push the lids up and make them leak... a bit of silicone and a breeze block on each fixed that

I had them like that for years, with fresh water in


bottom ones need vents too let the air out of the top of them too of course - I used caps on the IBC taps with normal cold water tank fittings through them

I saw a Japanese toilet, where the sink was over the cistern. Idea was, you washed your hands into the cistern then that was used for the next flush.

Someone on here had used one and said they’re crap. I haven’t. I was taken with the idea though. If we could reuse more water before it leaves the house that would be a start.

If you scaled that up to a lab office building or a hotel that would be lots of water and money saved.

Water tanks that collect rainwater, then use it to flush the khazi.

When I lived in northern Thailand for a spell, years ago, all the water for the house I was staying at was collected from the roof. It was diverted into 5' tall clay urns, huge great things. Showering was done with a scoop, in the garden, whilst wearing a sarong. No privacy there, but the crapper had a screen around it.

When water ran out we would blag some off a neighbour, who was rich enough to have mains water piped in.
