My bike is 1997, that's probably a certified classic, over 25 years old.

If you actually bother to read it properly, that article makes no mention of a 2017 car being a "modern classic".

All VED is going up. What was 280 for quite a few years (the pre 2006 rates) seems to be 395 this year.

My Shogun is classed as a van it seems. I could not get car insurance on it, only a van policy. The VED was £290 for the year yet Parkers had it down as £630!!
I have given up wondering how things work for this type of thing, I just pay what they ask for and move on......

I have a similar thing. My little Suzuki jeep is apparently a van. From what I can see the original soft top that my particular car was ordered with had no windows, and that caused the classification. DVLA have told me that only Suzuki can authorise a category change, but Suzuki won't talk to me as the car is too old.

Classic is 40 yrs old in my mind. "historic vehicle" - tax and mot excempt

Could be a ploy to make owning classics very expensive to run , most will probably scrap them before they ever get to the free tax/mot stage. Rolling forty year classic status will only apply to those who see it through.

That's about the size of it. From the late 80s onwards, many porridge cars were better rust-treated and protected, thus survived into their dotage far longer than previous generations. Even at that I doubt they make up more than a tiny percentage of daily drivers, but somebody in the bowels of Govt has got a stink-eye on them.

I've often thought that the rolling 40yr "historic" policy is going to run into trouble. It's surely going to get to the stage , if it isn't already where so many machines were made of relatively decent driving quality/comfort, that they'll miss the tax. I mean, my old BMW k100 is virtually in that bracket, could be, if it was an old one - it's fugly but feels far too modern/reliable to be classed as "historic". Maybe it's just me getting old though.

I think that’s why they stopped the original historic vehicle class at 25 years. I was surprised they reinstated it to be honest.

The logic at the time was there was too much crap about on historic vehicle status and that was the easiest way to clear it up.

That said, one man’s historic car is another man’s ****ter.
