ISO container - reassembly

I want to put a 20ft container in my back garden.
Unfortunately, the field at the back is now a school, so I can't get access with a wagon.


If I get a container and cut it into smaller pieces, I can move each piece into place and weld it back together.

Anything id need to worry about? Would I need a specific rod/wire to weld corten?
How thick is the steel?

I've been looking at "flat pack" containers, but they don't look to be much more than the flimsy steel sheds that been'n'qued sell.

My dad became a school caretaker after he retired, the sports field was massive and lots of residential properties backed onto it, he used to do people access favours at weekends when nothing was going on.

You do get a proper filler for corten steel but the only people I know that use it are sculptors who want a good colour match or invisible welds.

I have never seen anybody weld a door frame or padlock box onto a container with anything other than regular mig wire or arc rods.

Obviously if you expected the container to sit on a ship on a salty sea for months on end then use the proper stuff but, even if you live on the coast, I expect regular wire painted over will work fine.
I have seen guys weld up self-supporting structures out of corten using stainless mig wire and that seems to stick as well. One guy I know has made something that got installed in a local park so I'm presuming it meets some sort of requirements.

I have got some corten tig filler if you wanted some but I would work out the length of weld required before committing to tigging it all up!

A roll of corten mig wire is about £200 if you wanted to go that way.

You might want to check the container is actually corten as well first.
I have seen some containers advertised as "single-trip". Some sellers use that as a selling point and say that means the container has only been used once but other people have told me they are cheap containers and not made of good steel, ie. they are only designed for one use. I don't know if they are all made from corten but, even if they are, I bet chinese corten is not quite the same as european/american corten

unfortunately, when the school was built, they dug out the hillside to level up further down the hill: theres a 30ft slope to negotiate before even close to the fenceline.

narrow street. very long sloped front gardens with terraces. it would be a major groundworks job to get a crane close enough .
if I was going to do that - I could clear access for a regular hiab just as easily, if not easier.

I wonderf if I could hire a chinook...

Won't a shed do ??
I can't see what a container would do that a shed won't. Especially when you consider the hassle of getting it there.
Containers are usually used as they are easy. If they aren't easy to place they loose there attractiveness

I'm wanting something secure.

I was considering just getting a 2nd hand concrete garage, but that means footings, and pouring a floor.
plus the doors are never secure enough.

no point might as well build it out of concrete blocks

you have the expense of buying it then getting it there then trying to get it sited

strong enough with a twin wall twin door or second part being the gate

most of the steel doors im aware of open outwards not inwards they tend to leave them type of doors alone a little bit compared to the ones that open inwards

How secure do you need it, you might end up spending more than what is inside is worth? For workshop or just storage?
Best thing I would recommend is a master blaster alarm, we had one in our old workshop, you really don’t want to be in there when it goes off…

more secure than your average wooden shed.

I should point out - I've been offered the container FOC as part payment for some electrickery work I'm doing for a local container/storage company. - either 1yrs free storage, or a 20ft container .

It's probably going to work out more expensive than building something in the long run though.

maybe. I was thinking I could just cut the container up at the yard, have it brought over in smaller pieces, weld it back together.

only thing it would cost me is labour, electricity, and welding consumables (maybe a welder)

How much space do you have to get it past your house? You could hire a tracked mini crane to help reduce the number of pieces, otherwise 2.3 t is going to be a lot of pieces…
