Is there a law against taking stuff out of builder skip?

I was working in (South ?) Kensington, London around 2000, walked past the back of Penguin Publishing, they had three skips full of Apple Macs, the old iconic ones. Asked the security guard, who said 'help youself', I got three back to Exeter on the train, complete and working.

The trick is to raid it when everyone has gone home and no-one's looking.

I think the bigger social sin is adding your crap to the skip, not liberating a few items. Wood offcuts have no scrap value.

My best mates nickname when he worked for a restoration company as a chippy was Skippy. every morning he went into the four skips at work before getting in the van, and every night when they got home. He ran his van on the scrap he got out of it. Company wasn't bothered as he used to save them at least 5 skips a year.

That's the other thing on that computer job. They were throwing out about 50 broken almost new laptops. I salvaged 20 for the company and we had 1 each. They were delighted.

Recently right near us was a skip on a driveway, they were clearing out their old dad's place, as soon as I took the slightest interest in the contents they practically begged me to take some stuff, there was some useful gear in there, inc some very decent old school gardening tools, they even handed me an old typewriter !
They said come back and help yourself to any other bits we put in there too, which I subsequently did. I guess from their point of view it makes more junk room in the skip ( that they're paying for)

To be fair some people just don't like stuff going to waste. For example I was given a Halfords roof box and left it on my lawn. Being a horder I have had some mental health issues, largely down to my wife thinking I can sit in a tin can for 3 days but also tidy my collected paraphernalia.
If some one took it I would be happy as I keep moving it out of my way, but most wont.

When i was working at our old headquarters for WMFS they had a large roll on roll of skip to dispose of anything they did not need or want at the new HQ.
A firefighter went and took something out of the skip to use at his Station.
Some jobsworth tried to discipline him......

We call them skip rats, I was always told once something is in the skip it is the property of the skip company but it never stopped me from asking the skip hirer if I could have something out of them.
