Is it worth spending the time trying to repair a fridge?

My fridge which is about 3 years old has stopped working. It is not the fuse as the light comes on. The compressor does not come on regardless of where the thermostat is set.
I don't mind having a look at it, but if it is not something obvious I am likely to be just wasting my time.

If you can easily get to the thermostat, bypass it to make sure the pump runs. If it does, depending on make, you'll probably be able to get a stat fom espares or the like. Other than that, I'd probably bin it ,

You can have the thermostat sensor come unclipped from the ice box when you defrost or clean the fridge, it needs to touch metal to read properly.

I did buy and fit a thermostat for one fridge that was about 4 years old. It continued to work for another couple of years which was probably reasonable value

I did have to do some minor modifications to fit the replacement as the "genuine" original replacement was different to the manufacturer fitted one

You can usually find a dismantling video on youtube to make things easier otherwise clips tend to break or screws get missed

I have access to the thermostat , but I don't know which of the coloured wires to connect to bypass to see if the compressor comes on.

if you have a multimeter bearing in mind its basically a relay or contactor you should be able to trace it or if you part number of fridge or thermostat there maybe a wiring diagram

I'd say yes!


We have a Samsung "American" fridge freezer that was playing up that needed a new fan with housing, stat, and some other sensor I can't remember that came in a repair kit.
£70 odd at least 10 years ago and it's still holding my beer at 4° to this day
Depends what it is though, £1900 or a currys cheapo one.

Definitely worth trying, I've fixed our oven and tumble dryer, oven was sneaky, had an optical cutout on the PCB that switches everything off when you take it apart

Difficult to see from those photos but presumably you have a brown+blue+y/g coming in from mains the brown/live going into thermostat so either the orange or red goes to the compressor. If you look at the compressor you should see what wires go into it and bridge the brown to either orange or red as required

Well worth having a look at. I repaired ours, it was just the compressor starter relay.

Fix it. Done our dishwasher and fridge, various bits over the years. Various washing machines too.

There's usually a model number on a sticker on the inside. Google it for spares info and youtube it for the common fixes.

I think the single Yellow wire and the single Blue wire go to the light.
