is there a piece of wood with a hole in the end nearby? If so, that's a linstock, to keep you far away from a bangy thing (cannon). If not he could have used something as early as a serpentine. @Brad93, You are thinking of a matchlock, a flintlock doesn't need a slow match. Are there any other 'interesting' bits about?

You could be on the way to making Burgess (spelling) blasting cotton, I'd have to check on some of my old chemistry books to be sure, however I suggest this thread is closed or someone could be getting a visit in connection with the firearms acts, explosives legislation or the control of terrorism regulations.
