Interesting car modifications

As said above, sometime the only other option is walking. Like a brake pipe spliting when driving through the highlands of Scotland in winter. It's a handbrake, not a parking brake.

Posted this on another forum back in 2008.

A mates Reo was loosing engine oil from the rear crankshaft seal at such a rate that it almost used as much engine oil as Diesel on the way to Kent and the W & P show from Cheshire. No problem for Steve :-D

There was a hole the floor so his wife could watch the level, and switch the pump on and off, it worked, it was a long way back!

I once "refitted" a rocker arm in a Ford Pinto engine with a hammer....
The oil feed had got blocked and the cam picked up on the follower and spat it out. Well it was a cam out job otherwise
It ran perfectly for thousands of miles after!

I've whittled a temporary sump plug out of a bit of wood as a get me home, long walk to buy some oil but the wooden plug stayed in there for the remaining 50 miles of the journey

Didn't traction engines sometimes use Poplar? Something about it being hard to set on fire in the application from memory.

I have to admit to doing a bit of in-field bodgery to get me home once.
I was on my way back from Weymouth in my Hillman Avenger with a carful of mates when the clutch cable decided to pull its way through the bulkhead.
I calmly pulled over, got a pair of mole grips out of the boot, pulled the cable back through the bulkhead and locked the grips round it to stop it going back through.
I sold the car about 6 months later with the mole grips still on the cable.

We had a Moggy 1000 that had its rotten sills packed with fibreglass loft insulation then had resin poured into them.
I later bought a 1300 Morris ****al that had its rear radius arms tied to the rear axle with camping straps. The worrying thing was it had passed an mot like that just two weeks previously.

Also I'd want some method of stopping the valve opening due to vibration acting on the lever.

Ford Anglia used to be good for rear spring hangers rotting out
Bodge was remove the rear valance and spring hanger from chassis leg hammer a length of wood down chassis rail drill wood for spring hanger under seal plenty of it and refit rear valance with self tappers
you could always tell if it was dodgy by the self tappers or pop rivets on rear valance

Don’t knock the sump plug. I did exactly the same on a GSXR race engine years ago that had 10s of thousands in it.... at least to see if putting oil in it helped. It didn’t.

I only recently found the sump plug thread on my GSs is the same as spark plug threading for that age.
Handy to know.

A friend got his rotten Renault 8 through an MoT by plating over the chassis rails with Formica stuck on with body filler. A quick coat of schutz and it looked like a first-class mig job.
The Triumph Herald he had didn't lend itself too well to a similar bodge, so old fluoro light fittings were utilised as chassis outriggers.

I've seen a few belters over the years. But one that springs to mind was finding a small aluminium plate, about an inch and a half square, that had been screwed (with woodscrews by the way!) onto the top of a piston to cover a large hole in a P6 Rover (2200 SC iirc). Only discovered it when the head was removed to fix a coolant leak.

this was a common bodge in the war years when the ford Flathead V8s blew a piston non was available
so they removed the back two pistons and rods to make them a V6 and block off the holes off in the bores with blocks of wood oak i believe worked best

I repaired a Viva for a chap I worked with using electrical trunking from the place we worked. It was a perfect fit and looked like factory when it was done.
