They will very likely write it off. If you want to buy it back and repair it yourself don't let them take it away because you will never see it again, recovery and storage fees soon mount up and stuff will go missing in their yard. Even for assessment make them come to you they are only going to walk round it, they can do that just easily at home as in the centre.
We did the same with the other halfs D2. They massively overvalued it IMO. I didn't complain, they knocked the scrap price off the value (cost to buy back) and I think once I repaired it we had £2800 left! Apart from the bumper I fixed everything else myself.That's what we did with Mrs Robo's car, can't remember the exact figures, but got it back plus a cheque for £900, it cost me a couple of hundred in parts and we pocketed the rest

Buy back now is usually 40% as that's what sinetic and Charles trent are paying flat rate on everything through the door from insurance company's.
If you want to keep the vehicle hold onto it and all documentation until sorted.
If it goes to copart or anywhere else will come back with more damage than it left with. As just a processing site and everything gets moved with the forklifts.
Just go with what they say to start off with as guessing insurance is already involved but be willing to argue with values etc.

Bought my MR2 back when it was written off...think I paid them £300 which was less than the exhaust cost me . Luckily I had it on an agreed value policy.

Important thing is DON'T go to a repairer that the insurer wants you use. Choose your own repairer - you have the right no matter if insurer tries to suggest otherwise. Insurance companies often have ties with repairers who then do the job down to a price rather than up to a standard.

As I am away my brother has inspected it and sent me photos now and there is no panel or paint damage luckily however the bumper is hanging off the front, and there is a scuff in the rear of the bumper - The car was absolutely immaculate prior to this, It’d just been in a body shop to take out a couple of minuscule dings last month because it was in that good condition I thought it justified it!
At the moment on the claim form I have selected that I am “unsure” whether I want to claim for damage to the vehicle. If I do claim for a new bumper and matching bumper paintwork, does the car get marked down as accident damaged despite it only being a bumper, not panel damage, in case of sale in the future?
Thanks for all advice. Shame she didn’t use her Defender instead of the car, it would be unmarked!

not lightly to make a differance for 1 accident as i was stoped with hand brake on when i got hit from behind they still want the size of my backside when insurance come roud even as was not my fault

once you put it through the insurance yes it does as they will register the damage to the vehicle
if minor damage like yours i dont think its worth it same with mirror damage when some idiot smashes it off when driving past you

Someone will come along with the right terms but you can report it to your insurer without making a claim.
It’s not supposed to affect your renewal if you don’t go ahead with it.
It’s so you can make a balanced decision of what your options are. Ie they’ll tell you what they think and what impact it’s likely to have on renewals etc so you can then decide to fix it through them or not.

No it will not.
Only if the car gets written off as an uneconomical repair will it be categorised as a category N write off for a car with non structural damage (your case)
Or a category S write off for a car which has sustained either structural or suspension damage.
On both of the above cases the insurance company would auction the car off to the highest bidder at an auction such as Copart.

I have never claimed on car insurance ever in all these years (probably have an accident today after writing that).
Paintsprayer who has workshop opposite me - does not do insurance work - he just does streams of little low speed carpark dings and minor restoration work. He reckons there is not enough money in insurance work. Few large "factory sized" body repairers in the trade have packed in.
I think the big problem for the car owner is how much salvage cars fetch on Copart now.

Which Cat (?) they are assigned (?) is a "bit hit and miss" now - given that assessors work from home viewing photos (laptop/pyjama's job).
A "writeoff" is now - the trade price of a vehicle - minus - the salvage/recovery/repair/coutessy car/warranty sum. If the later adds up to more than 50% - the car is written off. Buy back will be a thing of the past - due to high salvage prices.
Some cars - water damaged on hybrids or vehicles with Lidar systems have such a high warranty risk - the insurers just bail on them. What looks like a light bumper impact is the death of car.

I follow a few you tube channels that cover salvage restoration, I think that because there are so many DIY “experts” now who are bidding for these cars and fixing them at home is the reason that salvage prices are so high, most of them are using second hand parts from breakers in order to restore them and even then there’s not a lot of profit.
So yes it’s easy to see why the insurance company’s are writing these cars off when all they need is a bumper and a headlight.
Last winter there were dozens of brand new unregistered high end Audi‘s going through Copart, all flood damaged from a dealership, I couldn’t see from the pictures any evidence of water ingress to the passenger compartment on any of them. So yeh water in the electrics or some modules.

I would think you are right - this may well be the reason.
But the high salvage prices are killing the big large body repairers in the bodywork trade. They now really only do real small jobs - anything medium impact or more than a couple of panels - just gets written off/sold off for salvage - high parts and paint/labour/car hire prices don't help either.
At one time - you would look at an accident damaged car and think it would be written off and it would get repaired - now most writeoffs look like they could have a few bits of plastic - duct taped up and driven home.
I have never bought a car from Copart - but have in my time collected a few for people I know with our lorry - watching cars that are going to be repaired being lifted about with forklifts - is a bit heart wrenching/sickening to watch!
I think there is also a lot of cars in Copart (run and drive listings) with other serious mechanical/electrical faults on them - that are given a bit of light panel damage to get them claimed for/listed and sold. You might also hear the terms 'actual loss' to describe categories A and B, and 'constructive loss' to describe C and D (S and N).
There were several back street garages in the area where I live - buying accident damged cars and kicking them straight - but they have all but gone now. What suprises me is - where do all these CAT rated repaired cars go? You never see them for sale very often (odd one on eBay). Where do they all go - sold on FB from peoples driveways with the history hidden/ignored? Do they get exported?
Government have also given up on the joke that was VIC checking. Police are now recovering 50% of all stolen cars (only the other half now evaporate off the face of the earth).
But it is said the high salvage prices are keeping insurance losses down - so thus keeping premiums down. Personal injury claims are down over the last few years - not sure the reason for this is - if cars are getting safer or access to the courts because of Covid was limited? But the whole inflated salvage pricing structure is a mystery to me.

You mentioned that cars going through Copart which are being sent there because of mechanical damage ……. Yes that’s definitely a “thing” whereby an individual will deliberately pull a bumper panel out of alignment to make it look as though it needs minor repairs, only to discover when they get it home that the engine needs a rebuild. The fact that most folk seem to buy these cars unseen from an online auction only increases the chances of buying more of a lemon that they thought they were buying.
You mentioned that 50% of stolen cars were recovered, I’d guess that a fair few are stolen to order to get the parts to fix these accident damaged cars.
I read last week about a stolen £200,000 Bentley, stolen from London and discovered in a lock up in Pakistan, the thieves didn’t realise it was fitted with a tracker, just goes to show how quickly cars are removed from the country after being stolen.
I know a lot of the worst ones are being bought and sold abroad as the category listings are irrelevant once the car leaves the UK
