Infra red thermometer - where to buy

I quite fancy one of those non contact infra red thermometers to measure the temp of hot metal, brake calipers, hot water pipes etc.

As my birthday is coming up I thought I would put one on the list. In the past I have found that my family like to be told where to buy tools otherwise they get socks etc. Machinemart don't list them on their site. Can any one suggest a supplier. Telling my wife or mum to bid on ebay is a non-starter. I guess we are talking up to £30ish.

You'll save the money very quickly when you start pointing it at bits of your house in the winter. A friend came around with one of those things and we went around the place to work out why we were cold..

The single glazed windows were bad, but the uninsulated hatches into the roof and the windows with no curtains were pretty bad too. We've probably saved a couple of hundred pounds in heating oil after fixing all the bad stuff, and even more fitting a thermostat to control the heating (though that's a different matter entirely as it would have been illegal had we not fitted it before Part P regs were introduced).

Failing that go for a catering suppliers like nisbets. they always have them at a good price as they are apparently a kitchen H&S must now.

Try searching for the T512 or E090 in the weblynx box. I suspect that the E090 would be best suited to your needs.

just be careful if you want it for checking VERY hot things the range are not always equal.

I bought one from eBay for about £15 that goes up to 950c and its bang on accurate. Been worth every penny.

I have one that I bought from Maplin some years ago, it is very useful as a guide but I do not believe it is that accurate. Reading up on them it seems that to get an accurate one you need to be able to calibrate it to the emissivity of the material you are sampling, which in turn you need to know.

That's my experience anyway.

Well someone has woken up an old thread of mine.

I bought one from Machinemart if my memory is correct. It lasted a few years and then packed up. It was interesting to use on bits of my car but I didn't make any great discoveries. I have not replaced it.

I got mine from ebay for about £16 a couple of years ago and it has worked really well, don't know how accurate it really is, but it's good enough for what I want. Biggest problem was keeping it away from the family after they realised that the laser oointer could be used to send the cats spinning around the room for hours...

Mine came from eBay as well. Can't remember exact price but think it was around £15-£17 incl P&P. Bought from a Chinese seller who had excellent feedback and trouble free transaction.

I also bought a digital laser tacho as well - perfect for checking motor, lathe, drill etc speeds. That was similar price and again direct from China.

The Lidl one only goes up to 220. Fine for playing at home but not enough for me anyway, I'be had one of my stoves up to almost 500 degrees!

I've seen temps of over 400c on mine. Stove not hot enough tonight.
