info on perkins engine needed

as said, 15w/40 but a good brand if youd like to be good to her.

i use mobil 15w/40 delvac mx here in everything, been doing so for a long time.
id class it a great oil personally but everyone differs in their opinions when it comes to oil so each to their own.

I use delvac mx in my trucks, would agree a very good oil, but too expensive for a tractor that leaks ! plus advised not suitable for the older diesels. absolutely great in my truck though, stays clean for longer period I found, engine is quieter and I get about an extra 1.5 mpg over previous oil used. averaged over 4600miles.

its a broomwade road tow screw compressor 90 cfm dated 1980 it hasn't done a lot of work as theres no wear in the engine . its a 1st time starter and it don't smoke when running

i wouldn't put in cheap oil because its leaking (if it is) , which afaik its not, and anyways i personally wouldn't compromise the engine oil just because it was leaking, id do what a good fitter would do and repair the leak in the first place, if there was one as i said, and the rope gaskets will do the best on the modern mobil oil.

as for not being suitable oil for an engine like that, ill call that balderdash.
not because the statement is wrong, its technically not, but times have moved on and so has oil.
ive been using mobil oil here for the last 25 yrs without as much as a hick up, i have a workshop here that ive serviced tractors from dextas to massey 135's and all the way up to 200hp modern tractors for people and apart from the odd customer supplying his own oil brand because thats what he runs in his engines everything else gets filled with the mx.
ive run oil through a portable particle counter a few times in the past, youd be surprised as to how dirty cheaper oil is even out of a new sealed drum, the cheaper quality brands would just scare you tbh especially if you were putting it into something more finite than a perkins .152 .

not in all my time have i ever had a problem with an engine burning or leaking a quality oil because of the oil's fault, unless it was never changed, 99.9% of the time its something else that's the problem.

as for the mx being "expensive", its about a tenner over the price of most of the oils in a 25ltr drum which is cheap peace of mind imo.
and as for older oils, this isnt a 1943 ferrari we are talking about here, it is after all a perkins engine..

Tinman, you are more than welcome to rebuild my engine for free, I would appreciate it, you seem to have taken my comments personally, not meant that way at all, just been told by those that know old engines that havent been rebuilt will do better on the old classic type oil, like I say use delvac in my trucks ,and find its great, tractor gets used maybe 3 hours a year so rebuild is not cost effective,it doesnt burn oil/smoke use or lose water, especially as to sell its easier to sell as is genuine original not played with to a enthusiast. I would totally agree nothing worse than an amatuer rebuild/spray over, see loads at sales , I wont bid on them as most are bodged.
I had over 20 mfs/t20s/dextas, now just keep a few. all as is off farm condition. regular oil and filters are done all the time, the one that leaks is a mf 40 digger, good tool to use.
I wish you well and certainly am not questioning your personal choice on oils,as I to use delvac , quality of workmanship , or indeed anything else. each to his own. ps the drip that comes out the bottom is normally what I would call a leak.and I did not suggest a certain brand of oil would make it leak, thats ludicrous, any oil I put in will come out unless I strip/rebuild. end of conversation.

sorry arther, my bad, its just the way id come across typing at times, i meant no harm in it that way nor did i take your comments personally.
your right in what your saying about the older oils, there isnt as much additives in the older oils but my jury would be out with whether the new oil is any worse than the older oil, indeed id consider the newer oil to be a lot better for the engine.
and you know as well as i do that even back then with the older oil they wept too, the oil seals didnt weep because of the oil alone imo.
altho there is the chance that an engine that dosent do much and spends most of its time lying up that then there could be an effect but i have no idea on that one.

id commend you on using mobil oil tho, its not an oil that a lot would use mostly because its not in every store and the assumption its a lot dearer, but when the wheat is separated from the chaff there isnt much in it from what i see.
the straight delvac isnt much dearer than the other known brands altho its when you go further up the spec scale that it gets dearer, but dont forget so do the rest.
imo dear oil is cheap in the long run tho.

Was talking to a chemist that was working for BP at the time and one of his jobs was with engine oils. He said Mobil was maybe 4 to 5 years ahead of anything they had.

it kinda helps soften the price of some of their oils.

i worked for a company who made timber harvesters yrs ago and one day i was out with a lad who wanted to completely flush his 3 month old new machine of castrol hy spin 46 hydraulic oil and replace it with mobil dte 25 hydraulic oil as she was heating the castrol to just over 100 dgs which was going to end up detrimental to the seals amongst other things.
the summer then was warm in fairness, more than we would normally get i remember and it led to her running hot.

anyways, i spent a day flushing all the oil out of her and i replaced it with the dte, i stayed with him for 2 days after to make sure all was ok and the days at the time were the same if not warmer.
the hottest he was fit to redden her to was 72 dgs, i remember it well and i took it on board as good education.
from that day since ive used nothing but mobil in all my machines here and so far its paid off imo.
oil and good quality filters, but the latter is a topic all to its own.

He was a clever bloke as you would expect he was developing an additive to make flare stacks burn cleanly in Alaska. Locals were not keen on black snow!

I know the forestry commison were using some type of environmental friendly hydraulic oil in their machines and they were the only ones suffering any breakdowns

i know little about the bio friendly oils tbh but what i do know is its that dear that a mate of mine told me that any time they need it on a job they filled the machine with it and when they came off the job it was drained into the drums again and kept for the next time it was that dear.
but being the kind of men they are they would of only being draining the tank of oil and not the rest so after a while it id only be a case of going through the actions as it id be well mixed at that stage.
anyways what i took from it all was its DEAR oil.

BP man did tell me a story about formula shell. Remember that? He said what was happening that the petrol had small minute molecules of water suspended in it making the engine run better but it was this water that was causing all the problems in the engines. I think it was fords and Vauxhall that were the worst affected. I know I worked at an Austin rover dealership at the time who also had shell petrol and we never had any problems with it!

maybe thats why my men were draining it out each time.

for long enough there was no such thing as eco friendly oils.
the day the first digger landed on a site id say they couldnt of cared less what was in her running the hydraulics as long as she was fit to dig.
times have a changed.

formula shell is back round the 80's or 90's isnt it, it would of been round the same time of the duckhams green oil would it?, i cant remember seeing much of it about but its not a oil i use either.
altho in saying that i have a good 80-100 ltrs of it in a container here but i didnt buy it for the love of shell, i bought it because it was cheap at an auction.
its for a quad i have here, it has some kind of a jasso (spelling ) spec that i need for it so it will do the best for the quad, its fully synthetic oil too so she wont know herself.

there is a local topaz near me here who has a fleet of lorries on the raod, they would be buying topaz oil cheap but they use mobil delvac mx in their lorry engines....
it dosent say much for the topaz oil tho, not that im a fan of it either.
