Industrial style metal sectional workshop?.

Been thinking for a while to make a decent size workshop down the bottom of our garden.

I have an old school Yardmaster shed that has stood up to 20 years of weather with no issues so that has got me thinking of a sectional building of some description made if metal sidings similar to our work's workshop (but not as high!).

Just wondering where you'd start looking for such a thing?.

I made mine from
100x50x3mm box section
bolting plates fro 8mm but a smaller shed u can use 6mm...
providing u can take delivery of 6m length and can and weld...
A little careful planing it becomes a bolt together exersise...

When I was looking there were several UK manuf kits at reasonable prices but tend to be for large type sheds....ie RSJ beams etc....to heavy for u....?

Hello all, looked a Nissen huts; interesting but not for me.

Price wise I've seen some pre made kits between £8k to £10k (didn't see if that was with them building it on site or not?.)

I want something to last 20years + well built and hopefully put together by me and a few helpers.

I would pay what's required for a good quality sturdy unit and do it once but on the other hand don't want to get ripped off.

I've seen a few places do bespoke units but don't want a flimsy "big shed" at the end of it really.

Brother-in-law haunts agricultural auctions as a hobby and is constantly returning with obscure 'bargains'.

He recently bought the steelwork for a large agricultural building for only slightly above the scrap value. I can't recall the width, but the length is 25m!
It's the framework only. He plans to clad it in Kingspan seconds.
There was a second, much smaller one sold as well.

I don't know how common it is to find second-hand steel frames, but it might be worth checking auction listings.

My friend who owned Patricks reclamation yard & who is now deceased used to own a very large £ multi million reclamation concern .
He often had H section girder skeletons of all sizes for sale . Even cutting and welding on construction plates on 3 inch H section for clients .

You buy in your purlins and insulation and set the stantion in place. They worked out very cheap .

I offer that you Don't buy any self dismantle buildings yourself they usually take a long time to safely dismantle have loads of unwanted holes and rust , cost more to rebuild then a brand new one .. the seller usually wants premium prices for tat and the land cleared cheaply .


Another company company " English of Wisbech " which was local to me was making prefabricated structures of all sort of sized . My shed was a five portal shed 20 mtrs wide by 40 or so long with a double door porch air lock fabricated , erected & clad in plastisol sheeting for £9 K & vat in 1994 on my own 9 inch thick cast & floated concrete slab .


So it might be worthwhile seeking out such companies in your area and doing as much wrt floor slab and stantion foundations etc as you can .
IIRC There is a book by Blackwell Scientific " Farm building construction " or similar . Almost all you neeed to know how to set out & build is contained in it

I had this finished shed and another slightly smaller self build shed insulated 3 inch sprayed foam then put stock boards in low down where needed I did need planning permission . The double porch door leaves were a simple inch & a quarter thick strips braced in the corners with a triangle of solid pine , glued & screwed square , then clad with with 5mm external marine ply , glued and secured 3/4 felt nails after adding in appropriate bracings for triple hinges & the locking & bolting arrangements

I've been looking at similar last night for a project I have in mind . Is the bottom rail set on a plinth above mean the slab level and sealed from the inside so no mice or rain splash can get in . Can they be made without a lip at the door in ?

define decent size ,,, a local auction here often has brand new stuff going through at humble money , granted its in Bangor NI ,,, but maybe worth checking local auction houses

They come and check that the base is level and squared as the whole unit sits on like a top hat. Seemed to be a close fit, there are mice outside but never had signs of one inside, leave traps set but never caught one, I made a piece of wood to fit on the door lip to push bikes inside. The door locks really secure with pins on the hinge side to lock in place.

Thanks the ones I saw advertised on line last night looked very similar but appeared to show sunlight along the bottom rail when viewed from the inside .

However it may appear to you. youd be wrong , it's got 40mm insulated sheets all round, roof and walls, and the door i have is an isulated roaster doors so I think it should be more than insulated enough for me to play in the shed.

im glad that you have done it and corrected what i said but from the pics it didnt look that you had done so

at least you had thought of it and prepared and done it for your own peace of mind

What kind of size are you thinking? I make some very sturdy but resonble sheds, if you can clad and erect yourself?

Sorry to everyone who's replied, this has gone one the back burner unfortunately.

I have had a look about tonight to take my mind off things and these seem OK and relatively local.

I will be putting the footings in and building it over a few weeks probably.

Just a nice big space to store all my crap and work on fixing things with my son and daughter.

Just had a measure and probably 8meters long and 6 meters wide (maybe a bit longer).
