Basic question! Will a single phase induction motor (on wood turning lathe) always run in the same direction or can it be wired/switched to reverse?

yes...look under the wiring cover,they normaly have reverse direction instructions,depending on motor type is only switch over 2 wires

So does that mean that it should be possible to have a change over switch for convenient reverse running?

Yes. Use a double pole double throw switch.

Santa bought me a pillar drill for xmas. I wish to do the same to the motor by putting in a reverse/forward switch.
Would this be suitable? its a 240v motor, but Im not sure about the Amp rating of the switch if its suitable.

10 amp rated. should handle the drill no prob. check the rating plate on the drill. stan. (mobile phone).are you sure swapping neg/pos will reverse the.motor. ??????me----a bit doubtfull

An electrickery mate of mine is coming round to do the job for me. I have checked for a plate on the motor but it evades me, very vague.
The pillar drill is a Titan from Screwfix...not necessarily cheap to buy, but I expect cheap to make. Seems solid enough though, after I greased everything I could that had been assembled dry at factory.

To reverse a single phase motor normally you swap over the wire ends on either the start or run windings but NOT both. Simply swapping the live & neutral incoming wires will normally not work!
