Incorrect use of a hammer drill

I thought I would share this little gem with you, I am doing a bit of building work at the moment and I have a couple of builders and labourers on site, the other day I gave a 6kg SDS hammer drill fitted with a 2” chisel to one of the labourers and asked him to chase out part of a wall that had already been cut with a grinder. The conversation went something like this – James, have you used one of these before – yeah, many times – Great, take this and chase out the bit marked out in the kennel – OK.

As the job shouldn’t have taken more than 15minutes I went to check up on him about an hour later, from outside the kennel I could hear a lot of 4 letter words being uttered – Upon asking him what the problem was he replied that this thing is a ******* to hang on to and tries to go everywhere – with that I reached across and turned on the rotary stop. I would have P***ed my self laughing but this chaps arms are the size of my chest. To be fair he hadn’t done a bad job – god knows how?

Surely YOU should have moved the switch to "Hammer Only" before giving the power tool to an un-skilled worker??

This reminds me of a story in a Chinese restaurant with a client. Finger bowls were on the table as starters arrived. During starters the waiter asked if we knew what to do with the bowls as it was our first visit to the restaurant. Everyone said yes. Then after the starters I watched the client drink the warm water with slice of lemon. We then all proceeded to to wash our fingers as you should do!

if u had hired the tool out to him and he wasnt competent to use it and had had hurt himself he could sue u

Probably true, but where do you stop? If someone tells you they know how to use a tool you ought to be able to leave them to use it.

doesn't work like that though when you get to court, just like thinking the guy you let drive your car told you he had a licence

I know, I'm just looking at the common sense angle and thinking of where we'd be if we supervised everybody doing everything rather than just checking they know what to do...

if you think about that long enough and start to remember all things you've seen go wrong or get bodged we would probably be in a better place

could be worse, i have a 60mm chisel for my sds drill. Well, had up until my stepfather used it like a bolster and bent it

not technically minded then, you would think that the chuck end would give a little hint it actually fitted into something

u would be supprised how many ********s there is out there . i hired a carpet cleaner out to a punter i did a dry run demmo for him . he rang up next day complaining machine wasnt working brought it back and i looked at it and was working perfectly . he said it was soaking the carpet and wasnt taking the paper off wall err pardon ,daft git was trying to suck the wallpaper off the wall with the cleaning wand . he thought it was a wallpaper stripper unbelevable i kid u not

been there, done that. you don't think to check when they turn up in a car. BIG EXPENSIVE MISTAKE

My gran got a twin tub washing machine back in the 70's, my mother bought it for her, we visited one evening and it was making a hell of a racket, the father told her he'd have a butchers and see what was the matter with it. She'd only decided to wash every plate, cup , mug and saucer in the house ! They were in dust !

I asked him if he had used one before - if he had said No I would have shown him. Besides, what would you say to a customer who tried to instruct you in the use of a hammer drill

We're getting to the state where you have to get a signed piece of paper everytime you lend a tool to someone.

I had a similar experience when I let someone use my farm jack, he said he understood the dangers but still nearly knocked himself out with it.
