Incorrect use of a hammer drill

Boatyard I worked in sold a small rib, motor and trailer to a guy who bought it back saying it was slow. They checked the motor over, took it up the river, declared it fine and gave it back. Customer returns it again saying it's still slow so they run it up the river, all seems ok so just to make sure they take it up the lake and cane it all afternoon, good as gold. They invite him down the yard and take him up the river in it, he's happy and collects it the next day, jobs a goodun.
That afternoon he phones up to say it's slow again so they agree to meet him where he launches the next time he takes it out. They turn up and watch him reverse his 4x4 down into the slipway, unhitch the trailer, jump in the boat and off he goes. They were all surprised how fast it went still attached to the trailer!

I've seen that one done deliberately by a company delivering a boat on a trailer to a place with a private slipway that had no vehicle access. They used a winch with a dolly in normal use to wind the trailer into and out of the water. So the new boat was delivered from the nearest slip with vehicle access with the trailer still attached to the bottom.

Just lucky they didn't run across a shallow bit I suppose.

I suggested it might not be a good idea, although I was tempted to suggest he tried live & earth. That would have been technically more correct and could have acheived the desired result.

Mrs Robo had always done toast under a grill and complained my electric toaster was no good. She had been pushing the lever down to turn it on and let it "warm up" for a bit before putting the bread in by which time it timed out and ejected the untoasted bread!

I had a similar experience when I let someone use my farm jack, he said he understood the dangers but still nearly knocked himself out with it.

i got myself with one of thos just enough weight on the jack and i had hold of the upright part, the handle fell down with enough force to activate the ratchet it bounced up at a high rate of notts and my thumb was in the way

u would be supprised how many ********s there is out there . i hired a carpet cleaner out to a punter i did a dry run demmo for him . he rang up next day complaining machine wasnt working brought it back and i looked at it and was working perfectly . he said it was soaking the carpet and wasnt taking the paper off wall err pardon ,daft git was trying to suck the wallpaper off the wall with the cleaning wand . he thought it was a wallpaper stripper unbelevable i kid u not

i worked in a couple of tool hire shops and there where times when we refused to hire equipment to people, just when you thought people couldn't be that stupid some one would prove you wrong

To be fair on the farm jack, I'm well aware of the danger and have used one quite often for years, but I still managed to smack myself hard in the skull square on with the handle when it slipped from my grasp in the classic scenario whilst lowering a heavy object down a couple of months back.

My father in law is someone I wouldn't trust with anything. He asked to borrow old satan the 12" 110v unguarded makita blue angle grinder and I just flat out refused, I wouldn't have loaned it him if all the safety guards had been on let alone in finger stealing configuration. The mother in law rang back and thanked me later, she was terrified at the idea of me saying yes as was my wife! He worked in finance and stuff all his life so he's completely mechanically clueless, so what comes naturally for me er... doesn't for him.
I learned my lesson early on with him, he found a old bayonet in a house they just bought here in France when they first came out, so I showed him how to use a honing stone to bring it up to a really sharp edge and test it on paper etc, whilst cautioning him to be really careful with it afterwards. That night he was using it to open oysters against his wife's recommendations again, slipped, went straight through the oyster and severed a tendon in his finger and had to have reconstructive surgery. No oyster gloves, uber sharp bayonet. I don't think I'd have done that even blind drunk, let alone sober with someone bellowing at me not to do it and to be careful...

They were taking a while, so i went to investigate - i found the kettle precariously perched on top of the domed hot plate lids...

We all do stuff wrong, but some do stuff without even looking at this situation : )

another fool once brought back an electric wallpaper stripper i hired and the outer plastic case was all buckled and i turned it upside down and the tank had all burn marks on it in a ring shape the pillocks had heated it up on the gas ring u have to laugh or u would cry , no deposit returned there

i have literally just seen an operator in work standing on the forks of a high reach pump truck pumping himself into the air to reach the top of the racking...

I called up my partner when she was visiting her olds. Her father answered, so i had a bit of a chat with him. He kept complaining he couldn't hear me, that it must be a bad line, etc.etc.

When we finished, and he passed the cordless phone to his daughter, i heard a grumbling comment from him in the background -

"huh... i had the phone upside-down"

When i was still living with my own olds, i suggested to my father that he used my compressor to do his bike tires, rather than painfully (for him) pump them up by hand.

He managed, but said it was a whole load of trouble, and that he did not think he would bother again.


I guess that was my own fault, as how should he know you can change the tool on the end of the air-line! : /

we aren't allowed empty pallets in the shop floor after a contractor climbed a stack to reach an air con unit, slipped and broke both his arms, compound fracture in one. All pallets are banned now lol

Just gave me an idea for a cheap alternative to a man cage, screw a pair of boots to a wooden pallet, lace yourself in and up you go!
