The main issue you might have is that a lot of insurers won't insure anyone under the age of 30 on a rear wheel drive car with an engine bigger than 2.5 litres unless you can prove you have at least 1 years experience in a rear wheel drive car. Had that issue when I bought my BMW 530i after driving front wheel drive cars for 10 years.

Thanks for the compliments everyone! In other good news, on my holiday, I went to the Haynes Motor Museum, and I was next to a ... XJS! The owner was nice and was asking me "have you checked here?" and ... well .. yeah I had and passed with flying colours! This usually means good for the rest of the car.

Feeling very positive, and I'm trying to rest myself before I start the project.

Do you have a reasonable selection of 'normal' mechanical tools, sockets/spanners/etc?

You need to remove 'stuff' to weld behind/under it and put it back afterwards...

There are better options than wd40 - it's a water displacement fluid (hence the 'wd' in the name) and although it works after a fashion it's not the best for helping remove rusty and seized fasteners.

the metal case is what i have only a cheapo set done me good over the years and spanners ive got loads of them

i will take photos if that helps but ive got 3 sets here

the pink tub has both sockets and spanners within it

Bilt hamber auto clay is a tenner. But be aware it will strip everything off the paint and make it look dull (but very smooth) so will need a good coat of wax/sealant afterwards to maintain the gloss and protect the paint.

Consider one of these - reusable, quicker than the clay bar(s) and just needs a mix of your normal car shampoo as a lube.

If you go for one, break it in on the windscreen before moving on to the paint. Halfords also have them, but iirc a couple of quid more. I used to use clay bars but moved to this as it was taking ages to cover my [big] car with them - the mitt is so much quicker.

Ensure the stands are placed properly too.

i had the stands and the ramps also gave those away the ramps just went yesterday when i finally dug them out the stands was cadged by the neighbour when i moved house

ive still got another set of each however im keeping my dads set the reason why my nephew isnt getting them is he dosnt deserve them the way he treats his tools and i suspect he will leave them as cant be bothered at best of times otherwise he might have got a set for himself

same with a house he had to clear recently left a large tripple set of ladders as couldnt be bothered getting them out of the celler didnt even try to sell them either last minute joey as i call him

Quick question: for a car with no brakes ... bad idea to put it on a ramp bearing in mind it is not on concrete? (And then tie the wheels down to the ramp?)

It holds itself up as well as the apple did above Newton's head ... IE: I think the wire that connected it to the brakes have snapped and it's just an ornament right now. (The handle)
The pedals themselves feel very spongy ... which hopefully means just new brake fluid.

I will post back on this thread again and see if any member on here can transport them up to you as saves on postage

as goes for ramps you will need the extra long ones the old type will catch at front and rear of the car

to chock them behind the wheel was a piece of 3x2 wood made with a slight cut out on them or most use bricks at back of them

oh yeah nearly forgot with car ramps if you turn them and place wood where the tyres was going to be you can lower the car onto the wood its a much better idea than sticking your car tyre under the car stands come in handy if youve got them but its another way of making the car safe if you havent got them

Just for the record, I don't have a MIG welder + kit - that was just my teacher allowing me to weld in the classroom.

pliers stick them in some oil or diesal they will work again small set of sockets as ive got 2 already

thats the lot i believe at least it gets you started just fill in with what you have missing oh and watch your 13mm spanners they go like crazy same with the sockets as i have mine missing
