when I concreted my drive I dug out and put 5 inch of concrete in 5 to 1 mix and its lasted years no cracks, but straight over grass is asking for trouble, as the grass dies and all the roots rot away there will be shrinkage in the soil, he might end up with crazy paving

Wont be a problem for the OP
If its straight onto uncompacted soil, the concrete will crack as soon as the soil dries out underneath and someone runs a car over it.
Ill give it six months...

that, and id say the smell off the dead grass is going to be rough enough altho the concrete isnt porus so it wouldnt be as bad if there was gravel on it.

that all aside, my mind boggles at the thought that there is someone out there geting and doing work like this, and that there is some one stupid enough to employ them to do it.
he will have to re do his drive way again in the not so distant future and tbh, imo, if your that stupid and trust worthy then it serves you right.
