...isn't concreting over your front garden slightly more involved than spreading a damp proof membrane over the grass and pouring out the concrete?

My neighbours need extra parking space, so they're doing away with the front garden. They have got a couple of blokes in to do the job, and the are laying lengths of 4x2 on the dpc and levelling out the wet concrete.

As I said, I'm no builder, but surely they need some sort of hardcore base underneath? Is 4" of concrete strong enough?

4 inch will be ok but the loose soil needs digging out to clay hardcore or dolly laid and compacted then lay concrete. went in a tranny pickup truck with irish accents were they and a mobile phone number with ask driver for details on doors

I think you need planning approval for that too these days. I think the law changed due to flooding, surface run off and lack of soak aways.

if it runs down on to public highway your supposed to fit a channel drain across to stop water going on to public footpath that could ice up in winter some do some dont'

Did they get planning permission first ? Now a requirement if new area covered is more than 5 square metres and not water permeable

Just finished one for daughter and had to have planning permission because it was concrete and fit a drain between drive and pavement with a soak away pit.

I think some older streets did this as they had no drainage on the pavement so ran onto the road

My first house (mid terrace) did have a gully to the road gutter, however as with everywhere the council saw fit to fill them in, causing thousands of houses throughout the land to suffer rising damp, mine included

Our house (mid 1800s) has downpipes onto those metal pavement insert gully things, then onto the street.

Old houses are never up to current regs.

Yeah I've heard about the planning permission thing. Evidently there has been a really massive increase in the quantity of rain water that the sewers have to deal with since people have been concreting their front gardens. Wonder how many acres of grass have been lost?

That's probably the real reason for the rise in sea level - nothing to do with global warming!

We had those gullies but they blocked up with dirt, or when they re-surfaced the road, and got pinched by itinerant scrap metal thieves.

a couple of years ago I was working in the middle of an estate on a slight hill .the wiring had got damp I asked about it and punter said we were flooded what a water leak no it rained like hell and the water flooded down the gardens and through most of the houses mainly because of drives and patio s

Wont be a problem for the OP
If its straight onto uncompacted soil, the concrete will crack as soon as the soil dries out underneath and someone runs a car over it.
Ill give it six months...
