A bit of a sweeping condemnation there , it depends largely on the intended use. I doubt anyone thinks the Lidl/Aldi jobs are up to professional demands but for the hobbyist and occasional user they're fine, as many attest.

Have you ever tried one?

The same can be said for most tools.

If your a mechanic for example then well known expensive brands can be justified for every day spanner work

If like me the tools come out a few times a month (at most) then decent hobby stuff will be good

I've got a sub £100 gasless mig welder.

Allowing for the gasless bit it is spot on, only takes 0.7 spools and they are a squeeze so you can imagine how small it is

Ideal for quick repairs outside

Not offering an opinion on quality, but banggood have a sale where the aforementioned £50 arc welder is now £31

It's obviously not gonna do 250A but might be handy in the original context of "slnging something in the back of the van"

The same email has a link to a "CNC laser engraver" for £36.

Hilariously, one if its selling points is a "protective panel", which appears to be precisely one sheet of perspex so I'm sure your eyesight will be fine if you only stare directly at the front of the machine

Another linky - I'm not brave enough to try this out but if there are any intrepid explorers on here who want to give it a shot (and presumably would wear a welding mask while operating) then knock yourselves out!

I know some one that converted a 80 ft x 14 ft barge into a floating drydock and only used the cheapest no brand name inverter off ebay just to see how long it would last, in fact it did the entire job without a problem. The biscuits required for the tea breaks cost more than the welding plant !

My arc welder came from Aldi many many years ago now, I have no complaints, doesn't get much use though.

Maybe have a look at what Machine Mart have? More like to be able to get spares etc if necessary??

I bought one of those in 1987,£350+vat,lasted 2 years,supplier said its unrepairable!

The Murex Transarc Tradesman DC130 is an older DC welder that still has a transformer but offers fully-variable control by using an SCR-controlled bridge. It has the features of an inverter without the potential unreliability.
The electronic components are basic 70's, fairly easy to fix, and circuit data is available. Some repair hints here:
