Ifor Williams lashing points

I know there’s been a few threads on the topic but my search has come up dry.

I have a LM146G, what’s everyone doing for lashing points?

Not a fan of the rope hooks

Ifor suggest fitting these but have had the pins pull out before so also not keen on that idea

The trailer gets used for anything from moving plant/tractors and cars to loads of scrap and lengths of steel

Would also be good if the tie down points could be used for some “creative” winching

Most HGV drivers I know suggest hooking straight to the chassis but is obviously a bit of a pain on Ifors

What is everyone else using or are we all just going off the rope hooks and hoping for the best

Someone welded some round bar on my flatbed chassis members before i got it - linking all the bases of the ropehooks together. I generally hook off this bar next to the chassis member. I always used to use rope hooks anyways though

Now i like that idea, even better that I have the material sat around doing nowt!

Now the question is, would EN16T be overkill

These can be bolted on.
This one is 1/2" dia and is rated 3k lbs

depends on the diameter I guess, I think 25mm would be overkill
beware EB16T is a bit funny to weld, ideally pre-heat.

I would not.

I am using some M24 ones on my trailer. They might not be designed for side loads but I guarantee they are the strongest lashing points on any 3.5 ton trailer I have ever seen!

They are rated to 2.5 ton safe lifting with a big safety factor. They are screwed directly into a heavy section RSJ. I have yet to see them bend or stretch

They are rated for a direct pull along the axis of the fixing bolt, they are de-rated as the load moves round the circumference and not rated for side loading, use them at your own risk.

+ they are not really good for bouncing down the highway either.

If you don't see them on vehicles normally, there is a reason why.

I mean just look - put a sideways load on one and there is nothing to bend because the base is flush against the floor.
The ones on vans are held in by screws or tiny bolts!

In fact angular lifts are common on shoulder eye bolts. For example when slinging off 2 of them you will never get a straight pull anyway. The angle depends on how far apart they are.

SWL of less than a tonne for the one pictured, according to it's markings. De-rated substantially once out of line with the axis, but along the line of the eye. Once you go sideways on the eye - a definite no-no. You can get swivel lifting attachments for that reason - but they aren't cheap - for a good reason.

Multiple smaller bolts holding something able to take sideloads is stronger.

No - that's why he wants something better. The spindle pulls out of the sheet metal pressing pretty easily.

Fitted to a trailer I borrowed - ratcheting away, one came free...the wood deck it was fitted to was rotten!

Rummaging through my company standards, some shouldered eyebolt suppliers do suggest you can side load - but the de-rating is considerable. 45 deg from vertical and you are at 30% of the SWL. Just be careful.
