Couldn't help saying that. But I'm a bit interested now in getting one of these. They seem about the cheapest option for decent water storage. Was just thinking yesterday could do with more water storage.

I once spent a 10ft hour nightshift lifting empty ibcs onto a 3ft high roller platform. By hand. On my own.

One of the forklifts had broken down so we used the one we had to lift the full ones down at the end.



I was very tired afterwards, but it can be done.

Make sure you protect it from frost. Even a thin layer of ice will expand and push the sides out and if it has already been exposed to UV the brittle bits could crack.

We use 4 IBC as water butts at the allotment.

2, complete with cages are buried underground and get filled with a pump from the water what seeps into the holes. As they are away from the light we do not suffer any growth in them.
The cages were manhandled in and back filled. The plastic tubs were carried and lowered in. The plastic tub is surprizing light.

The 3rd is above ground and is refilled by rain water, or if we have enough from the ground water via the pump. To keep that one growth free we have a supply of beer sterilizing tablets, they work very well.

The 4th is as yet unused. But plans are a foot to use it as a water supply for the new workshop. Watch this space.

With the cage, I'd be tempted to use some creeper, like Honeysuckle, to shield it. That stuff would have it covered within several years, even from a small cutting. I have several down one side of the garden. All started as small plants, and they grow with a vengeance. I swear that one of them is trying its damnedest to strangle me now, every time I walk down there.

The cages are heavy, but 2 strong bods can shift them. Plus they do fit, one way or another through s standard size gate.

The above ground one at the allotment has a ball valve fitted, so when it is full it shuts off. Save a mess.

The neighbouring allotment plots have 4 in a row, descending in heights, again all with ball valves. The head of pressure in the lower one will allow a hose pipe to have a range of about 4 feet. Good enough to reach the whole plots from both sides.

All the pipe work, plumbing parts etc. were all salvaged from a scrap yard for the cost of a few packs of Hob nobs.

I'm about to plumb the two IBCs behind the barn to the down spout on the barn. It's a big roof so the pipe is 6".

I've had a look around on the bay and on various usually american blogs on the plumbing.

I have the output sorted, they will be used to irrigate the poly tunnel and are placed on the banking about 2m higher than the poly tunnel roof so gravity will do it's thing there and I have sorted out the various plumbing needed for the output.

But I'm still thinking about leaf filter, over flow and how to cut into the down spout to take off water to the IBCs. When the Pennine rain gets going there will be far too much water to pass through the IBCs so I'm having a think about it this week while working away.

Anybody got a working solution for getting the rain from a down spout carrying lots of water into an IBC with a leaf filter that doesn't get blocked easily?

a triangle surface of chicken wire for leaf filter

inside you could use pebbles as a filter if you want

if you have plastic downpipes id insert a 2" or 2 1/2" elbow into the 6" pipe and glue it into place used as a catchment of water coming down the pipe but allows to much to go straight down the original pipe

I can't find 150mm rainwater diverters off the shelf, I have found some scary prices on some large rainwater harvesting fittings so I may just put in a 150mm fitting with a smaller branch and then put it through a filter as Gaz suggests then I can use cheaper fittings.

Have a look at the ornamental pond plumbing stuff, I used some connectors I got from Watermarque who sell pipework for Koi carp breeders.

IBCs make great water buts but just a word of warning sat outside there is a very real possibility that the Legionnaires disease bacteria can grow. Not a problem in itself but of the water is used in any way that could cause a spray and that spray is breathed in by anyone then they could catch a potential killer disease.

you could have all the flow run into a big box/tray/tub whatever... cut the bottom out (or just big holes) chicken wire in the bottom, then some gravel/whatever to act as a filter... water filters down through the gravel/stones and into the IBC

overflow on the top of the box back down the drain so if it comes in faster than it filters it overflows down the drain

overflow on the ibc so if they overfill it drains down the drain

you want to use the large ones not 20mm pebbles quicker to flow through but catches leafs on them

if you can use this then its the better option
