IBC as a water butt

At last, I was with camera and in a location were the 3 IBC I have helped turn into water containers.
So here are a few images.

Above ground, the ready use one.



Yes It has a lid with green plants. One of the Shed allotment members filled the potting bin and planted it.




Can you see the other 2?

Both sunk into the ground, below water table. The hole is our pump to remove water for the other butts and watering systems.

Just plumbed an IBC in as a water butt, I used this to fill it from a 110mm downspout on the barn. Works great, fits in minutes, even comes with the hole saw. The good bit is that it finds its own level so once full the rest goes down the downspout, also if it gets blocked with leaves, the water butt stops getting water but the downspout doesn't back up.

The only problem is that I found out that the IBC used to contain concentrated viagra, it just took an hour to roll the hose pipe up......

I once spent a 10ft hour nightshift lifting empty ibcs onto a 3ft high roller platform. By hand. On my own.

One of the forklifts had broken down so we used the one we had to lift the full ones down at the end.



I was very tired afterwards, but it can be done.

Did you make or buy the yellow-coloured pallet breaking tool leant up against the (now) water butt? Nicely one by the way, I think I'll nab the idea

Yeah, could be that...

I was never a "powerlifter" as such - but I trained with a fair few, and did the same routines (with a bit less weight).

Lifting the ibcs was more a matter of leverage:
Pull the top towards me, so far side was off floor. slide it forward until it was against frame, lift and slide on to frame.

I didn't physically pick it up!

Looking to store rainwater I've been offered one or more free IBC containers. Local and it'd be no drama to collect but I'm pretty sure these have been left out, exposed to the elements for years.

Worth bothering or would I just be taking on something that's brittle and going to fail?

Give them a good thump. If brittle, they'll crack.

The cages are good for logs….if using as a water but try and get a black one, it stops the green alge growth. Make sure its clean too, or you know what its had in it

It's a case of take what I can get. Wonder if I could paint them black with something that wouldn't degrade the plastic (any more)?

All ours are outside, none seem to have gone brittle, worth having for the cages if they are free
