i love this old machine cyl boring

Been boring a climax block to take larger liners today. with this old in situ boring machine.
it was used to bore engines with the engine still in the car. Apparently they used half a ball in the bottom of the bore to catch the sworf. i have to take a 1/4" out and the cast liners just slide in and are pinched on the top lip as these stand 3thou above the block. I would not mind betting some of you have used one.

Quick google reveales they are still available in India by all accounts.............probably the old British tooling???

I had a Riley block rebored in situ by one of these machines.

reminds me of when I put a new cylinder head on my car, I wasnt sure if the piston to valve clearances were going to be too tight, so I would have modified the pistons with the engine in the car,using a router and template. luckily I didn't have to do that though

I ended up lying on my back under the car scraping the big-ends in with a pair of kitchen scissors on that Riley

The local garage had one of those, or similar. I had a couple of blocks done, not in the car though, they preferred to do it out if they could. I am guessing it went for scrap when the garage closed

This one was in a pool of water in the old shed at the local garage i repaired the bosses fridge and i took it in payment we done some repairs and got it working this is the 4th block i have done love the thing

Yep, used them on tractor blocks! Good old Buma boring bar!

I did consider buying a Van Stormin version to do my tractor block.

Interesting about the Indian connection as I understand that all the tooling and manufacturing rights for the Black and Decker valve refacing machine went there as well and for a long time spares were available from there.
See that the boring bar is finished in similar thick red paint.

Valve refacer done in gold as well, we had a Van Norman boring bar dont know why but I think the motor was a separate item, it was 50 years ago

Hello Andy. Is that one of the motors that you bought from John? You are certainly removing some meat with that great boring machine, I remember fitting new liners to a Standard Vanguard years ago, Wet liners with a seal on the bottom and liners standing proud same as you, Excellent job my friend,

Have used quite a bit of the old Buma boring bar during my apprenticeship, I cant quite recall what perkins engine we used to do a lot of but it took about 20 mins from start to finish per cylinder, I was pearched above it with a paint brush trickling paraffin down the bores, If I remember correctly you used to get chrome liners with a lip or cast liners with a step so that tool came in handy to just bore the little step in the top of the cylinder

I had a Perkins 4203 in a Landrover. The (dry) liners were extracted by a motor driven screw with a adaptor to fit the liner. Another time the guy used a brass chisel & bar to deform the liners into a figure of eight shape and then drift them up from the bottom. I used "Chromard" liners, IIRC they had a small bent-over lip at the top.

The first time I had them replaced I couldn't get the sump plug out so I had to drop the sump full of oil, lying on my back under the vehicle.

modern cars all became throwaway just replace not repair valves became cheaper also some valves you can't reface
so just cheaper to replace same as waterpumps you used to be able to get repair kits but now just replace them
