Its about 53 years since i used one of those for refacing valves,also had the stones and diamond dresser for the valve seats, 45* and 30*.Had a blasting machine for cleaning spark plugs. You could increase the pressure on the spark testing machine to test them at operating pressure. All good stuff

Just replaced valves on my tractor at less than a fiver each. Not worth anyone's time refacing them.

As Octo says everything is throwaway these days. Nobody is really doing re bores and engine reconditioning except on classic cars or tractors, just not worth it on modern vehicles. Think now I'd hate to be an engine shop with all that kit sat there waiting for the odd customer to come along.

Alright I'd love all the machinery but couldn't see how I'd make a profit with it these days. Be good for lots of personal projects though.

Just ordered an injector pop tester for my CAV diesel injectors. Most of those are made in India these days. You do see the odd old original CAV or Bosch on Ebay but most need work. Can't imagine there's a massive call for that sort of kit these days everything being common rail, high pressure electronic and the like.

The garage I served my time in , Had the same boring machine .
I remember watching the set up with "brass shim" behind the "cats paws" ?? to offset the centre bores on a BMC cooper s 1275 block , to get 1380 cc and leave "meat" between the centre cylinders lol Happy days

I knew a few people with boring bars, one bloke had the salesman they bought pistons through walk in when a car
was being bored, he hadn't realised they did there own boring and their discount went from 30% to 50%.

Some of the valves are coated or even Stellite hardfaced. The refacers and seat grinders seemed to go out of use in the 80's.
I picked a seat grinder, with dresser and literally hundreds of new and used stones, out of the skip at the garage we went to for MOT, probably around 1985.
My Valve refacer was also being chucked away about the same time.

i remember the original saab turbo had sodium coated exhaust valves about £30 each a long time ago

The sodium valves I remember had hollow stems, And the sodium inside was supposed to flop up and down transferring the heat away from the head.

My cosworth had them. It dropped a valve while sitting at a roundabout, I will admit it wasn't that far
from the motorway;-)

Sodium filled Ex valve seemed an OK idea, till I had a broken one in my hand.

On the contrary, there are plenty of engine shops, I had a 1950 228ci Head reguided, new valves and seats recut, light shim, and test was 200quid, they were overloaded with jobs.

Hello Andy. Is that one of the motors that you bought from John? You are certainly removing some meat with that great boring machine, I remember fitting new liners to a Standard Vanguard years ago, Wet liners with a seal on the bottom and liners standing proud same as you, Excellent job my friend,

They hold the toololder at a angle against a lapping wheel to touch up the cutting surfaces at the right angle. There will be a bar somewhere near a wheel that has a surface you can put diamond compound on to do the deed. There is a few holes in them to generate the different surfaces and you have to use them in sequence. Probably the sequence is stamped into them if you clean them up. Mine are.

I run the posh version of your bore still when doing my own cylinders. On mine the motor is a seperate unit so the vibration doesnt upset the cutter and the bar is basically a giant hydraulic cylinder. Its still pretty accurate but I finish a few thousandths undersize and plateau hone to final still.

Mine is a Burtonwood aero, not a van norman, a british company that switched from making aero parts to garage parts. I believe the detached design was used originally because it could rebore a radial engine in situ...

Output from it, as you probably know pistons are tapered outwards towards the skirt so I use them as a plug gauge to check before shifting to the hone.

These tool holders are for re-facing the cutting tool. If you look on the back of the large pully their should be a brass coloured ring and a post that fits the hole in the holder. You lubricate the ring with paraffin and hold the cutter against it to set the correct cutting angle.
Buma was based in Byker Newcastle. I visited the factory were these machines were made years ago.
