I will tell you about a tragic story
Twenty years ago I had a blocked main sewer on my driveway. On my driveway was an old van that I bought from the previous home owner to be used as a shed.
To allow jetting crew access I had to pull van onto the roadside. Van was insured under my fleet insurance even though not running, just because it made sense as it doesn’t cost to add it.
Neighbour who hated everyone was policeman.
He reported it for fun.
It went to court and as van hadn’t been in previous owners name and not been taxed for ten years it was decided that even though there was proof of it being a non runner and came with the property someone had to pay ten years back tax and that was me!!
Anyway back to this thread,
I gave the court my driving license as ID , said driving license was still in my parents address it escalated to the point the judge wanted to give a custodial sentence for giving false address to the court. Luckily common sensible prevailed as it was pointed out they couldn’t prove that I didn’t live at parents house. Still a expensive stressful day all because someone else’s turd blocked the drain

No win situation with the van though insurance not enough neither would a sorn declaration be. A***h*** neighbour pity the sewage hadn't backed up to his property.

That's not true at all.

"provided the insured holds, or held and is not disqualified from holding a valid license for the class of vehicle" is the only stipulation they usually make regarding licenses. What address the license has on it has no effect on the insurability of a vehicle.

If you declare that a vehicle is kept at a different address to which it's normally kept at, then you may have an issue because people do that to gain a benefit from lower-risk postcodes.

They dont like you trying to get one over them. I lived at my dads for a while. Different Postcode, with far better insurance quotes, so I 'lodged' my vehicles there. The Insurance company wasnt happy at all.

they give less sentence out for someone who donst have a license or insurance

and yet you can be contacted about your d license the fine or the threat dosnt fit the bill

I lived in the far east for 20 years or so, but always had a U.K. driving licence, registered to my parents house. It's apparently illegal to have one unless you are resident, but they have no way to chase that up.

I also had a Philippines driving license, up until a decade ago.

Oddly enough, when you hire a car with a U.K. licence you need to apply for a special code from DVLA before you can collect the car. Not so if you have a foreign license. I guess they just don't trust we locals....

I once lost my U.K. licence, in the Phils. I looked everywhere for it, hunted high and low, then ordered a new on on line. That was Saturday afternoon over there, and the new licence arrived at my dads place in the U.K. Tuesday morning!

He Fedexed it over to me, and while I was putting it in our bedroom safe I dropped it, it bounced under the bed.....

.......and there I found the lost one....

I expect that the only time it will cost you, to change address, is if you still have a paper license!

I'm not changing my paper licence until I'm 70, - 4 years to go, however it does show correct address

They can and do just pay out for the 3rd party and then refuse to re-insure you. Then you have to declare that you've been refused insurance and the new premium will be four to to five times higher.

Also applies to making sure the V5 document is correctly in your name and address.... licensed/insured/registered to the same address otherwise you're commiting an offence and problems with claims with the insurance company.

Actually the insurance industry shot itself in the foot with all those spurious claim denials because it got them a legislative shake-up that is the reason you have to answer a barrage of questions now when you phone up for a quote or renewal.

Nowadays they are legally obliged to ask you all relevant questions about your insurance cover and ONLY if you lied when answering those questions can they use something you did or didn't do as a basis for claim denial. They no longer have many the get-outs they used to enjoy.

So, if they ASK you if your license has the same address as the vehicle is being kept at, and you say yes, then you have lied. If they don't ask you then it can't be considered as part of the contract nor used to deny a claim.

EDIT: CIDRA 2012 reform is the act in question I believe and latterly the insurance act 2015.

I'm still struggling to understand why the OP wouldn't just change the address on the licence? Even if you have to upgrade to a mugshot licence some bigger post offices have a photo booth and will send it all away for you.

the same comment would apply to me and @pressbrake1 who had it addressed at the parents property

in my case i moved around too much so still having it at parents house meant they could contact me and let me know that the police had called or i got a fine from somewhere
having it addressed with me meant i could miss fines or court dates as i could be away from home for over a few months

nowadays they seems to be some dramatic focus that your license must be with you at all times where ever you move too

that would imply its down to something else eg: debt collectors

While you could be fined "up to £1,000", I would suggest that two key factors are missing from the debate - reasonable and proportionate. If you've just moved house, it might be reasonable for Plod to remind you to update your details with no further action. If you're questioned following an accident and you've "borrowed" a mate's car and "think" you're insured and it comes out that you've not updated your details for the last ten years, then don't be surprised if you end up with a fine at the £1,000 level (plus whatever else they care to throw at you)
