Damn and double damn!!! Just remembered that the rugby Scotland v Ireland is on live tomorrow, plus F1 coverage [of some sort] from Oz.

. Might see if I can strip the chuck and put it through the ultrasound cleaner as a starting point - don't want to miss the TV, so it's a bit of a 'no-brainer,' to lapse into the vernacular.....

Wife wasn't too impressed when I rebuilt my carbrettor in front of the tv.
Probably didn't help I had it boiling in a pan on the hob when she came downstairs.
Might have been a bit pungent

Mmmmmmm bring back memories of a new kitchen I fitted when I was single. Really pleased with it was most womans dream granite tops the lot.Wife wasn't too impressed when I rebuilt my carbrettor in front of the tv.

Had major falling out with friend with benefits when she was disgusted that I was using the bench to rebuild bike carbs, and there was a casing in the dish washer.
As to reference marks.......I learned the hard way as an apprentice. I now mark everything when it comes apart.

Well, to paraphrase FDR, "we have nothing to fear but fear itself". All very obvious when you get down to it, to the extent I haven't found the need to take pics. I'm glad I spoke to PB [now 600 Group] and got his advice re removing the adjusting screws before attempting the back-plate though. And the parts diagram he emailed me is now printed/laminated to A3 and on the whiteboard out there.
There was a fair amount of grease in the chuck [which I thought was a no-no, and oil was better suited?
] so the parts are now enjoying a hot bath in the ultrasound cleaner. Initial examination reveals the first 'tooth' on jaw 1 is missing, so once all is clean I'll remove the scroll for close inspection, and to find where the missing tooth has gone. With any luck it'll have, at worse, got caught in the grease and will be in the bottom of the u/s tank, or lodged in the scroll without doing any damage.....so still fingers and everything else crossed until then.
Rugby will take precedence for the afternoon, but I'm less anxious now that I've started and at least found what I hope is the only problem. Next will be searching for a set of inside jaws........

My PB 6 Jaw GripTrue has the first tooth missing from at least 2 or the jaws, possibly 3. It was me that did it as well
They are really quite a poor design as the jaws are sharply pointed at the end and the teeth carry on quite close to the end which means they are weak. Obviously you are not meant to grip so close to the end but sometimes you think you are not
Anyway as has been said you just have to miss these jaws out, when fitting them, until the next revolution, so no big deal.
I hardly ever use the 6 Jaw now as it is more bother than it is worth.

Don't you mean without it?
I'm taking it he meant I can live with the problem of being without the tooth, so technically you're both correct.....
Just needs fed in differently and not used at full stretch, like I foolishly attempted 
. My concern now is the whereabouts of the missing tooth, with any luck it'll be in the grease and so in the bottom of the tank after cleaning. Be good if that is the case - worse case is it'll have damaged the scroll, but if it's only the initial turn I ought to be able to dress it appropriately. again #fingerscrossed.

Nice to hear I'm not the only one who's capable of silly things - I can blame my age, what's your excuse?
Rugby's on so it'll just be a foray out at half-time to check cleaning, besides which it snowed overnight but has rained since with a Baltic wind so time out there will be limited.

Mmmhhh, a quick foray out and found the scroll is still stiff to turn in the body, shows there's something jamming it I think. Back in the bath but will look for a brass drift to very gently persuade it out, or break out my small Sykes Picavant puller if it's still proving difficult. 
But, probably not today.

I had a good look to see if there is any scroll damage but none was evident, so is it possible the broken 'tooth' from the jaw has got underneath the scroll and is tilting it in the chuck body? Thought the scroll does seem to cant a little.... ? Almost impossible to tell with it still being stiff to turn .
Off to bed now with an incipient cold, but I'd welcome any tips on how to remove the scroll if I make it out tomorrow. I'm thinking....
a) very gentle persuasion round the scroll with a brass drift or narrow hardwood block, using a wooden mallet and not a BFH
b) heating the chuck body with gas, then apply as a) above. But as it's had three 30>45 minute sessions in the u/sonic bath at 80 degrees this may be less than successful
c) rig up my small SP puller and apply gentle force with it
c) any suggestions from the Collective........?

Woohooh! It's all in bits now. 
Head cold's no worse so got out this morning to see what's what.
Having soaked the chuck body + recalcitrant scroll in the u/sonic bath overnight in a strong G101 solution I compressed-air dried it and hit on the idea of cobbling a drift from a short bit of copper pipe, flattened and trimmed to fit into the jaw cutouts. Gentle tapping [with a MFH] and turning as per @Hood's method

All now soaking in paraffin as there are signs of old, solidified grease in the nooks & crannies which I'm sure weren't helping. Next, brass wire brush everything and closely examine for signs of the problem. That can be done at my leisure as the 'pressure' is now off
. I'll also check the scroll is completely flat but I think it's highly unlikely it could have been twisted out of shape in the episode. No major damage visible at a glance, apart from slight 'chewing' of the very outer 'feed-in' on the scroll which I'm sure I can dress up with careful filing. I'll report further when progress is made.

Mhhh, feeling crap today so not much achieved.
All cleaned and dry-assembled after thorough cleaning, and it runs smoothly again. Little filing + emery papering needed at the the broken jaw and and scroll 'intake', otherwise I think she'll be good to go. We'll see.
As for reassembly, I've been reading and there seems to be conflicting suggestions for lubrication. So, its either lightly with
a) oil - great for decorating the face & shirt front
b) hi-pressure grease - excellent for trapping the odd bit of swarf etc
c) dry graphite
What do the Collective use?

On the manuals I tend to use a slideway oil as it sticks like **** but on the CNC chucks and the Forkardt manual chuck I use grease.
