I am looking to buy mig for v.w. caddy body repairs

My tip is total 24mm length about 6mm diameter at thread, 0.8mm. I have read very cheap tips burn out if wire jams, do the ones you use last longer?
On some second hand adverts people have tip dip,spatter spray,gel of some kind do I need any of these for good 1mm metal using co2?

I can go weeks without changing tips ,,, dont overthink this welding thing ,,, get some metal to practice on , and get stuck in.

I want to hopefully have all I need to start as this is my vehicle I am hoping to repair so I cannot travel if I need something else. some people say if they have burnback it melts a tip each time or is this cheap tips.

It doesn't. Don't worry about it.

More importantly: DON'T START ON YOUR VEHICLE until you've had a practice on some scrap / offcuts / old panels and have got a bit of a feel for it.

Then once you have finished practising. Put your practices clamped to a workmate or similar, then lie on your back under it and try again.

How far each side of weld do I have to remove paint and with what, it is a v.w. caddy, I have 4 1/2" grinder, discs to fit on rubber pad, flap discs also how soon after weld does it need covered with paint/sealer/underseal to stop rust setting in. What do I use for sealer and underseal. I cannot find this info on this site as told to do?

To weld you need bright clean steel, the paint at the sides will just burn if its a bit close. But be careful on body work not to grind it too thin…easy done with a flap disc, thats what I used to use when I was young enough and daft enough to weld under a car. You clean the metal up with what ever you can get in finger sanders, wire brushes, scraper…..In normal air with some humidity bright steel will bloom very quickly. When you are cutting out rust to repair the holes grow quickly, dont cut out too much at once, and if you can buy repair panels buy them. Welding up old motors is a very good advert for buying new ones.

For suitable products to slow rust look at some of the car fixing threads…there are many options.

you need to spend an afternoon with someone local who does this sort of work ,,, it would get you a lot of knowledge in a relatively small amount of time ,,, or better still a full day and you can buy lunch , it would be the best investment in time and effort ,,,, if you were local I would show you the basics.

I use an ipad, once Ive clicked the copy link on the advert, I just click in the post the paste option comes up if I hold my finger still.
On a computer you will need to right click to get the paste option.

So it depends what you are surfing on!

Both would do what you want I suspect if they are working properly. The red one looks the newer machine.

personally I wouldnt touch either ,,, that 4 settings thing does my head in ,,, no goldilocks setting , either too cold or burning holes ,,, I certainly wouldnt start into a car with one , thats the exact reason I bought the Rohr in the first place ,,,,

While I agree with your views on the 4 switches, the Clarke 135 was a highly recommended machine in Practical Classic magazine for bodging up cars 15 years or so ago.

they used to recommend 8 track tapes , and wheel trim covers , fury dice annd whippy Ariel's too ,,,, nuf said

try using a 4 setting mig on 0.6 wire , the novelty soon wears off/

One of them is six settings isn't it? Max/Min plus two other switches.
