Flood water goes to waste though, at least round my neck of the woods as Thames water have sold 20+ reservoirs and some of them are now housing estates. Genius... reduce water storage capacity and increase demand at the same time

So one says it's expensive to desalinate seawater, the other says it's cheap

That's not what it says. The Register's article says it isn't expensive.

Wikipedia says it takes more energy than "other" forms of water supply.

Without real numbers the Wikipedia comment means nothing. If it takes as much energy as you generate by breaking wind on a windmill for the "other" forms of water supply then 100 or even 1000 times that is still next door to nothing.

And as it says in the article - yes it creates carbon emissions but it's a small fraction of what we make anyway so back here in the real world there are far better ways to reduce carbon emissions than imposing hosepipe bans.

Hose pipe bans are not about CO2 reduction they are about saving water and looking after water in slow to recharge aquifers.
Using drinking water to keep lawns and golf courses green should be made illegal. It is a criminal waste of a valuable resource.

of course no one would dream of actually building new reservoirs in the southeast or any where else would they?

It's interesting seeing how they do it in much of New Zealand - the rural areas and towns often have no mains water supplies. Clean drinking water comes off the roof and into a tank; if that gets low most houses have a bore (well), which tends not to be so good quality, and at a push you can buy in any extra you need. Farmers use bores and rivers. People are self-sufficient and responsible for their own use. Not quite the same in city centres, but even in large towns people use a tank and rainwater.

As in Holland and other parts of europe, the Kiwis have realised that trying to drain off storm and flood water is stupid, so they have started building big flood ponds/fields, which take excess water and let it drain away slowly and help refill aquifers, instead of just diverting it straight into the rivers where it might cause downstream flooding - a problem we seem to get here fairly often.

Not quite true - we come in at number 53 (according to the following, which includes states as well as countries). The Netherlands, India and Japan amongst others, are more crowded than us.

Why isn't it true, we are in the top 20%.

Besides that list does not reflect the fact a good percentage of those above us do not have a national water system. And many have far higher annual rain fall than us.

Bangladesh for example is one big flood plain. It always annoys me when they go on about it flooding, what the hell did they expect, it's on the biggest delta in the world
