Why isn't it true, we are in the top 20%.

Well being in the top 20% (at a similar density to Germany, Italy and a few other countries which I at least think of as being a "bit like us"), perhaps doesn't quite warrant an exclamation mark.

You did read the register article didn't you?

It gives the figures quite clearly. Six pence per day per person IF you use nothing but de-salinated water and take nothing from rivers/aquifers. That's also assuming that you are using seawater rather than estuary water.

Building the plants would have cost less than Thames water has spent on fixing leaks (without solving the problem).

Saving CO2 emissions isn't my argument - it's the "greens" main warcry. Even after it's proven to be complete bull.

Saving water is all very well and just fine by me - I don't live on a flood plain. If all that water that's taken out of the rivers upstream of London was "saved" i.e. not put in storage tanks or channeled one way or another through the artificial drainage systems where would it end up. Personally I think I could live quite happily with the idea of London and big swathes of Kent being regularly half submerged.

I'm not really concerned with the supply problems of water companies. I pay them money and I get water, just like I pay Tesco and get groceries. I've never heard Tesco continually bleating about any supply difficulties. As I understand it the water companies are very succesful in that they provide profits for their shareholders. Their technical incompetence in not being able to plan for the effects of changing weather patterns (which everybody else has known about for several decades) is not particularly relevant. We are an island surrounded by water and are known throughout the planet as being a country where the stuff is continually falling out of the sky.

The difference between the water companies and Tesco is that if Tesco does have a supply difficulty then they don't take your money. It's fairly obviously in their interests then not to have supply difficulties. The water companies take your money regardless and then bleat that they can't supply your needs. There's no incentive for them to do anything about it because they get backup from the politicians and despite having taken your money it then becomes illegal for you to use the product that you have paid for.

On top of that they are then having ago at people in the press saying that those who want them to actually do their job are bad people because to provide what they have been paid for would be bad for the environment. Despite the hard science and numbers proving that it's no harm whatsoever.
