Need some help/advice with the hydraulic press.

The low pressure side of the pump isn't working. Do I **** about with it or try and find an electric/air pump that can do 4000psi?

I also could do with a new gauge. This one works but the glass is missing and the needle bent.

I have this electric pump. A nice Nitto. Although annoyingly 110v because it's for a site hole punch.

Pressure is more than enough so I would have to regulate that to 4000psi somehow. But I'm not sure if it will pump the ram quick enough or if it will have enough oil in it to pump the ram. It's a pretty big ram.

Reservoir on pump is 4l, a quick measure of the manual pump tank would give a rough idea of capacity. A pressure relief valve on the outlet of the pump could be set to 4000psi and the blow off to the return line. Would only need a couple hydraulic t's and a relief valve.

I would **Language** about with it and see if it took a minimum amount to get it working.

Longer term I would make it electric/ hydraulic. With the pump you have if it’s not enough to work the cylinder or it’s too slow then you could use an accumulator? Would you need a pump that gave the required working pressure or would an accumulator do it? Just thinking out loud.

Check oil level first ... then service the pump, those are not complicated

Actually just looking at it the pump is probably for a double acting cylinder and the ram on your press looks to be single acting spring return? In which case you would need a valve to change between extending and retracting. Most likely it is just an O-Ring in the manual pump.

Try 'Approved Hydraulics' at Stockport. They sell replacement pumps and gauges (amongst all sorts of other useful bits) Very helpful people and a good web site.
If they haven't got what you need then I'm sure they will know where to get it. Might be cheaper than losing hours of time ****ing about with it.

I suspect as stated above that the pump reservoir at 4 litres will not be enough for the capacity of the cylinder, you need some extra as the oil needs to circulate from the pump over the relief valve when working. If not much fluid is left it will overheat quickly.

Once you start buying hydraulic components, it can start to become a pricey conversion, I would be tempted to fit a new gauge and try to repair the handpump.

Personally I think I'd go the full service route, at least that way there's no faff. I don't see the point in powered presses unless you're using it every single day. We have an air over hydraulic enerpac and its ok... would still be fine with a handpump for our use.

I would be tempted to strip the faulty hand pump, chances are it uses standard seals available for a few quid, not much to lose in trying as can send it to manufacturer to refurb or buy their seals as a backup. Though I am Scot....deep pockets and short arms

I'd buy a 400bar 100mm WIKA gauge from RS online for £30, assuming you can get the right size fitting. TBH you can get a 63mm gauge in any fitting you like.

It sounds like you want to strip the pump yourself anyways, and if you can't make it work, you haven't lost anything...

I have one of their 20 ton presses and had the same problem.

I stripped the pump and totally cleaned it, I found that a couple of the ball bearing had very very small marks on the surface so they were replaced and if you look some of the springs they appared a bit weak. A little stretch of the springs which improved mine but didn't totally fix it, until I undone the ram release knob and removed the tank fill plug and applied some compressed air which I think alined/located the spring and ball bearing in the pump unit.

I've never had any problem since.

PS. I may have also used a bit of valve grinding paste in the ball seatings, to dress the surfaces, its about 10 years ago...
