Years ago when I had a proper job I used to use these, admittedly the ones made by Camping Gaz,
for welding titanium tafts on the ends of tubes. The TIG torch was fitted with a large rubber grommet
that also fitted the hole in the lantern shade, sorry, I mean gas lens.
About a 100mm tungsten extension and weld away in your own little argon chamber.

I bet you don't learn that now in your C & G.

Technically, that's not a gas lens, it's a cup or nozzle.

How big is it and what did you use do disperse the argon through the cup? Piece of scotchbrite?

Just looked up your profile and I conclude you are too young to recognise a Tilley Lamp (you swine )

We used to refer to them as "bottles".
Typical workshop conversation:- "How are you gonna weld that Fred?" "Was gonna bottle it."

The "bottle" rests on the work and it fills with argon from the torch. Just need pre flow set as high as it will go,
a quick flash to see if the weld remains silver then all the air is purged out.
Stainless wire wool is better than scotchbrite or indeed a proper gas lens.

Well, I've never heard of a Tilley lamp but we've got a couple of gas lamps for the power cuts this village has an abundance of.

But surely the reason stainless doesn't corrode anyway is due to the oxide coating on it's surface?
I'm pretty sure I've seen exhaust systems with the colours left on?

Did you read the link from this thread? http://www.mig-welding.co.uk/forum/threads/first-go-at-tig.49891/#post-562844 Heat tint colours are the result of the oxide layer thickening which 'steals' chromium from just below the surface which in turn lowers the corrosion resistance in some environments as the usual self healing* passive surface doesn't have enough chromium to do it's thing. Obviously when things get hot enough in service for heat tinting to occur naturally there's less point in removing welding colour but equally there's also less point in being paranoid about weld colour as something like an exhaust manifold will be covered in surface oxides a lot darker than straws/golds the first time the engine is run in anger

* For the self healing passive layer thing to work the part needs access to oxygen which brings us to things like crevice corrosion http://www.mig-welding.co.uk/forum/threads/crevice-corrosion.15360/ I've no idea if the part in that link had been pickled and passivated properly after fabrication, probably not, but the crevices left by the poor welding resulted in the filter leaking a few months after being installed. I forgot/never bothered taking pics after fixing the thing so wasn't much point in adding a conclusion to the thread but did cut out the affected area and pickled/passivated it afterwoods and AFAIK it's still being used

There is a also a #15 cup (53n89) for the large gas lens but it's shorter and i've got a vague recollection that it's not recommended for use with HF as it doesn't 'shield' the end of the collet body

Yeah i have a #15 knocking about somewhere ,but it finshes a couple of mm from the end of a gas lense.if you're walking the cup and your arc length gets longer than this couple of mm the current bypasses the tungsten and arcs from the lense instead.the shade of oxide is the last thing on your mind then

Can't see how that's expensive rapid want £63 + vat for the CK Pyrex gas lens kit and that's only one Pyrex cup not two.

Pm langy with your size. Bear in mind they are sized a bit like the alpine stars bike gloves. XL is more like L etc. I have some and they are nice.
I've not actually used them properly yet I'm waiting for a few more holes to come through on my old pair before I sling em out and swap for the millers.
