How would you remove this bearing?

Put the MAP gas back in the box and get the big guns out (propane/oxy) and get it to cherry red and try a big pry bar behind it

Hard to see on my phone, but that looks like an eccentric locking bearing. If so there should be two holes in the collar, one of which will have a grub screw in it. Loosen the grub screw then get a drift in the other one..give it a smack and the bearing should just drop off the shaft. Forgive me if I'm teaching grandmother etc...

Look at it, whistle through your teeth, pull the bearing seal out and slap a load of moly grease in there. Pretend it's fine and walk away.

Surely that is a retaining ring in front of the bearing in those pictures? I would expect to have to take that off before trying to pull the bearing. And if the bearing was seized in the housing, you'd have to take the retaining ring off before pulling off that housing.

In the past I have ground the bearing wrapped rag around it and hit it to break it without damage to the shaft, used to be a regular job at a place i worked at in the past

I put a reply to how I'd get the bearing off, we'll, here's one I made earlier! This was for a 2" shaft bearin. There's another 12mm Bolt on the other side of the box section to take a SP hydraulic puller.

Not too bad but the problem with the bearing shoved into that recess is you cant get a grease gun onto the nipple properly. There is also no room to screw an angled nipple into the housing, lack of lube is probably the reason for the failure so need to find a way of getting a 6mm pipe+fitting and rig up a remote greaser.

I always find with flanged bearings that the grease never actually gets into them. It just comes out of the gap between the housing and the insert.

Maybe a push fit style fitting, that is what is used on a lot of CNC machines to connect up to the auto greaser/oiler.

Easy way with bearings like that is to pull out the seal, tear the cage up and work the balls out, or better yet blow them out with oxy fuel if it’s available.

Then the housing pulls off with the outer race giving access to see and remove the seized inner race, which can be removed with care to not damage the shaft and nothing needs replacing apart from the bearing itself.

Often it’s because the housing is worn and needs replacing as well as the insert.
But there certainly are some that don’t work from new which does annoy me.

Recently had a situation on a 4" flange bearing that repeatedly failed , as @wyn pointed out sometimes the grease just pumps out of the housing. In our case we were using replacement bearings in an existing housing, after a bit of head scratching and some double checking I realised the annular grease transfer ring ground into the outer on the bearing was in a totally different place to the original. I ground a slot in the housing so it found the transfer ring and its now ok, you really do need to look at some of this stuff rather than just fit it.
